Stapler is a boss in Paper Mario: The Origami King. Also called the Fanged Fastener, it is fought in the Origami Castle. Stapler works for King Olly, being part of the Legion of Stationery.
Physical Appearance[]
Stapler, as its name implies, resembles a black stapler. Its personality is similar to a dog.
History[]
Stapler makes its first appearance turning a Koopa Troopa into a Folded Soldier. Paper Mario and Olivia can watch this if they peep through the window in the dungeon of Princess Peach's Castle. King Olly later summons Stapler to attack the heroic party in his castle. Paper Mario eventually defeats and destroys Stapler with his 1,000-Fold Arms by snapping them open.
Battle[]
Stapler attacks by biting to strike Mario. It can also launch its Staplers to trap Paper Mario, enabling it to take an extra turn to strike with Untag Wag if Paper Mario flubs his guard. Paper Mario has to damage Stapler by attacking it. Stapler will fire staples from its mouth if Paper Mario is too far away from him for Stapler to use their bite. However, there are a finite number of staples for Stapler to use in its attacks. If they run out, the boss will have to recharge the staples, which is when it will be the most vulnerable to a Rush attack. Stapler has three types of staples, with gold being the strongest, grey being the weakest, and red being in the middle.
After it loses considerable chunks of its stamina, Stapler will change the staple types. Paper Mario has to destroy Stapler by rushing it with the 1,000-Fold Arms technique and then snapping it open. The boss has around 350 hit points.
Trivia[]
- Quite unusually for the Legion, Stapler is the only boss from the Legion of Stationery that does not speak at all.
- It is also the only member of the Legion of Stationary who does not guard a Streamer.
- This boss has perhaps the most violent death animation: Paper Mario snaps it in half.
- There is also an error where the boss has its mouth fixed for the subsequent cutscene as it keels over.
