PERSONAL UPDATE

I know many of you have been following my progress after my surgery so I wanted to give you an update.

Although I was doing really well shortly after my surgery, I've had some complications since then.

First I noticed a lot of pain that wasn't going away.  Some of the pain was more of a burning sensation than the typical ache you get after a surgery like this.  When my hubby removed the dressing for the first time to clean it, we found that I had 2nd degree burns from the adhesive used to cover the wound.  That was the first ER trip.

The next day I noticed some additional pain and swelling and was concerned so we went back to the ER for them to check it out.  They really couldn't do much other than prescribe a 2nd narcotic pain medication.  The day after that, I went to see a PA in my surgeon's office who prescribed a steroid for 8 days to help with the inflammation that's causing the pain.  It has made a big difference already!!  I'm very happy to say I'm on the mend...for real this time!!  hehehe

I can't wait to get back to blogging "full time", but still need to take it kind of slow right now.  Thank you to everyone that has kept me in their thoughts and prayers and to those that have messaged me as well.  You are all such incredible people and dearly care for each and every one of you!!

Thanks for reading!!  Until next time...

Preview: "52 Reasons I Love You" Deck of Cards Book

I wanted to give you a sneak peek at a project I'm working on Valentine's Day.  I'm making a "52 Reasons I Love You" Deck of Cards Book for my hubby!!  I'm super excited about this project and can't wait to share the tutorial on my version with you!!

You've probably seen the "52 Reasons..." decks all over Pinterest by now, but for those that haven't, I'll explain what this is.  Simply put you use a deck of cards to create a mini book.  On each of the 52 playing cards you include a different reason why you love/like someone or something.  Some people keep theirs really simple, like the first one shown below, while others really add a lot to their decks as in the second picture.

This version doesn't have a tutorial, but is a great inspirational photo for a fuller deck.

The deck of cards book I'm currently working on is a mix between these two designs.  I'm keeping a basic "format" for all of the cards, but will be adding all kinds of things to each card such as stickers, lace, ribbon, buttons, cut out shapes, and more!!

Here are a couple pictures from my progress so far...

This is just a good photo of the basic "format" I'm using for each card.  My plan is to write the Reason # inside the heart and the actual reason in the rectangle below it.

After gluing in all of those hearts and rectangles my poor little rings were too small so I had to use some narrow satin ribbon instead.  You can see in this photo that I've started adding ribbon to some of the cards.

By the way, aren't those heart cards perfect?!?!  I got them at Micheal's last week!!

I'll be sharing my tutorial for these during the upcoming "Love-Filled Valentine's Event" here on Lisa's Craft Blog!!
Did you catch that?  There's a new event coming soon!!

Thanks for reading!! Until next time...

Crafty Day with Jess and Upcoming Bloggy Events

Crafty Day with Jess

A good friend of mine, Jess, is expecting her first child this spring and I'm so happy for her and her hubby!!  Jess happens to love crafts too so we've decided to get together one day each week to work on projects for her nursery and other fun crafts!!

Today we got together for our first day of crafting and I thought I'd share photos of our handmade goodies with you!!

Our main project of the day were these closet dividers for Jess' nursery...
On New Year's Eve we cut out the chipboard dividers from a homemade template and covered them in "Linen & Lace" scrapbook paper.  She decorated them with bird and butterfly die-cuts, stickers, and pieces of real lace from my stash.  Jess also stamped them with acrylic stamps and added plastic gems too!!  Today we worked on adding the sizes to the dividers.

Of course Jess has a big baby shower planned this month and since I make jewelry, I offered to make her a bird's nest necklace to go with the bird theme of the nursery and baby shower.  Here's how it turned out...
I had never made a wire-wrapped bird's nest necklace before so I was really pleased with how well it turned out!!  Here's a close up of the nest...

You all should know me well enough by now to know that you can expect tutorials for both of these projects in the near future!!  I just thought you'd enjoy this little sneak peek!! hehehe

Tutorial: A (Nearly) Perfect Accordion-Folded Disc

We've all made roughly folded paper fans as kids and as adults we now use the accordion fold for our craft projects.  If you're a perfectionist like me, then you've probably struggled with trying to get your folds even and straight.

This tutorial will show you a way to make an (almost) perfect accordion fold and how to turn it into a disc like the one below so you an use it for paper-crafting!!

During the 26-Day Christmas Craft Marathon, I will show you how to make ornaments that incorporate accordion folded paper discs into the designs, so I want to show you how to make them before the "marathon" starts.

Step 1: GATHER SUPPLIES
Necessary
- Book Page(s)
- Ruler/Straight-edge
- Pencil
- Cardstock
- Glue (I used Aleene's Fast Grab Tacky Glue)
Optional
- Decorative scissors
- Ink pad
Step 2: PREP PAPER
The line you add in this step is the key to getting your accordion folds straight.
Cut Paper
Remove the blank top, bottom, and side sections of the page(s).
Cut two 3" strips from your page(s).
Optional: Either tear or use decorative scissors to just barely trim one of the long edges of each strip.
Mark Paper
Optional: Add ink to the torn or decorative edge of your strips.
Using your ruler or straight-edge draw a (very) straight line as shown in the photo above.
Flip the paper over and draw the same line in the same spot on the other side.
Note: The way I marked my paper was my folding my paper lengthwise and then tracing the fold on both sides with a pencil.
IMPORTANT: Make sure your line is either placed where it will be covered up or that it's drawn lightly enough with pencil that you can erase it.

Step 3: FOLD PAPER
Determine how thick you eventually want your disc.
Fold your paper that distance and make sure that the lines you drew match up.
Flip your strip over and fold in the opposite direction and once again match up your lines.
Note: By matching up the lines, your accordion fold will be just about perfect!

Step 4: GLUE ENDS
Glue the short ends of your strips together to form a circle like that shown above.
Gather the non-decorative side together and push out the other side to form a disc.
IMPORTANT:  If your strips were 6" or less, the decorative edge will probably be too tight to form a disc. If this is the case, simply trim about 1/4"-1/3" off the non-decorative edge until you're able to form the disc without the outside being too tight.

Step 5: ATTACH DISC
Prep Back
Punch or cut a 1" - 1 1/2" circle of cardstock.
Add a generous amount of glue to the center of the circle.
Place a ring of glue similar to the one in the photo above.
Attach Back
With the paper shaped like a disc, press the cardstock circle in the center on the back of the disc.
Press together and quickly make sure your folds are evenly spaced and that the center of the disc is nice and tightly pushed together.

FINISHED!!
