If you look at Disputatio Formulae:Salve, you will see two new parameters we added to this template (I think we added them after I greeted you =]). You can now put Nomen usoris in casu vocativo (I have gone back and added the vocative of your name, but I don't know your gender, so I left it blank). If m, it reads gratus acciperis, if f it reads grata, and if left blank it reads gratus aut grata. Nifty, huh? =].--Ioshus (disp) 20:31, 11 Septembris 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Roland and I are working on something regarding roman numerals. For the meantime, culd you leave out the line MC=1100 from your new year pages? Consider using deanno, instead.--Ioshus (disp) 15:16, 28 Decembris 2006 (UTC)Reply

Trust me, I know =[... It's ok, we are working on a program to do it for us.--Ioshus (disp) 15:33, 28 Decembris 2006 (UTC)Reply
Ok. Sorry, this talk took very long. Let me first say thank you for your work and your patience. Here's what we have come up with. From now on, add the Roman numeral to the second call of the decennium. For instance, the year 211 shall be 21. Soon (within a few hours) the template will be fixed to include the information of deanno, which will become obsolete. You will not need to include a parameter to link to the (numerus) page, as the decennium template will be fixed to include {PAGENAME} (numerus) which will either be the numerus page, or redirect to the long-form name. Ie 210 (numerus) may rdirect to Ducenti et unecim. There is no urgency to go back and readjust the templates that you have just made, but feel free to change the call on any number page you see. This will help us to be consistent throughout. Again, thanks for your patience and labor!--Ioshus (disp) 17:01, 28 Decembris 2006 (UTC)Reply

Including categories in formulae

recensere

I saw you removed Categoria:Praefecturae Graeciae from the formula Nomi Graeciae. My guess is that you did this because pages categorized in this way are listed in the dump as if they were no_cat. Is that right?

Well, I checked with Rolande (we were discussing the similar formula Praefecturae Franciae) and he says there is a work-round: we can tell him, next time around, to exclude from no_cat any pages that have this formula. So, unless there's some other reason that I don't know, I'd like to put the category back into the formula -- it'll save unnecessary typing as I continue to create pages for the praefecturae! OK? Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 09:16, 9 Augusti 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I mainly removed the category from the formula, because all those pages were listed in the dump. But I will readd the category to the formula, though I personally like it, if I can see all categories of an article while editig it, especially if an article is categorized in more than one category, because then it's easier to check if a a category is missing or if one is superfluous (for example there were some articles of cities in Greece, which were in addition to Categoria:Urbes Graeciae also categorized in Categoria:Oppida Graeciae, because the latter category was included in the formula Urbs Graeciae).
Looking at the time, I should better add the category tonight, because if I do it now, I will miss my bus...--Amphitrite 12:15, 9 Augusti 2007 (UTC)Reply
I think, on reflection, you are right. It is maybe better to be able to see all the categories when editing. And I can paste all this stuff in when I make a new page, so no extra typing really. OK, let's leave things the way they are. Don't revert. And I hope you caught the bus! Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 12:45, 9 Augusti 2007 (UTC)Reply
I was late, but the bus was even later ;-) --Amphitrite 23:22, 9 Augusti 2007 (UTC)Reply

People categories

recensere

Thanks for your note on my talk page, Amphitrite. I hope the exams go well! Yes, when you have time for it, it will be really good to have those categories of people by nationality. It means a lot of sorting out, but very worthwhile.

As you say, "And maybe we should decide first how to name the categories: Categoria:Germani or Categoria:Homines Germaniae." The second type (as we already have in Categoria:Homines Turciae) seems more clumsy, but maybe (I think) it is the best. Words like Turci and Germani have multiple meanings. They are OK for medieval history, where we may be talking about tribes and peoples, but less useful for categorizing modern people, where we want to say where they live, not what tribe they belong to!!

Perhaps others will comment on this. Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 13:54, 14 Novembris 2007 (UTC)Reply

Using the second type sounds reasonable to me, so I will start creating those categories in the next time (not today, after learning eight hours for my history exam I have just no concentration left to do anything useful...) --Amphitrite 21:09, 17 Novembris 2007 (UTC)Reply

Frenchmen (and women)

recensere

I'm very glad to see you are recategorizing them! Keep in mind that if you come across any writers, like Carolus Baudelarius, you can put them in Scriptores Franciae rather than Homines Franciae. Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 20:57, 13 Decembris 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for reminding me, I somehow forgot about those other categories (I guess this indicates, that I should better continue to categorize tomorrow ;-)) --Amphitrite 21:13, 13 Decembris 2007 (UTC)Reply
But don't let me put you off! There are times when a job is best done in two steps. It may be quicker to put them all in Homines Franciae and then consider further. Up to you. Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 10:23, 14 Decembris 2007 (UTC)Reply
I will try to categorize the remaining articles at once and improve the categories of those which are already in Homines Franciae afterwards. --Amphitrite 18:39, 19 Decembris 2007 (UTC)Reply

Formula Insulae Graeciae

recensere

Was habe ich diesmal falsch gemacht?

[[Imago: 2011 Dimos Ko.png|300px| Situs insulae Coi in Aegaeo mari australi

muss es

[[Imago: 2011 Dimos Ko.png|300px| Situs insulae Coi in Aegaeo mari australi]]

--Aylin 21:12, 11 Decembris 2011 (UTC)Reply

Immediate children

recensere

I expect you've noticed, Aylin, that the "automatic taxoboxes" throw out large numbers of redlink categories (see Specialis:Categoriae desideratae) with names including "immediate children" and "immediate step-children". I have no idea, I admit, whether these are potentially useful :) If they are useful, do you think there is any automated way of creating them and tucking them away in a handy super-category? Or, if they are really not useful, is there any easy way of getting rid of them? I ask because I sometimes work through the list of "Categoriae desideratae", attempting to replace red categories with blue ones, and it gets difficult to see the wood for the trees ... Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 11:21, 8 Februarii 2012 (UTC)Reply

I'm not absolutly sure (and don't have time to check this tonight) if the "immediate children" categories have any other purpose than to link to the subgroups of a taxon in the "taxonomy/taxon" formulae, as you can see in Formula:Taxonomy/Grallatoridae for example - I don't know if this justifies their existance ;).
(There seems to be the option to let the automatic taxobox automatically display the childtaxa in the articles via the parameter "display_children", but I don't think that the categories are needed for this.)
I could try to find out which of our countless automatic taxobox templates is responsible for creating those categories and remove the relevant code (hopefully without breaking anything) or we could create the "immediate children" categories as subcategories of Categoria:Taxobox templates (or something like Categoria:Formulae taxonomicae).
Maybe a bot could do this, but since we don't need many of those categories at the moment, even creating them manually should not take very long. --Aylin 21:53, 9 Februarii 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks very much, Aylin. It's not an urgent thing, so don't take time that you can't spare. Yes, maybe the simplest way will be just to create the categories: that will dispose of them neatly! Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 10:31, 10 Februarii 2012 (UTC)Reply

 • Quandocumque paginam aut breviorem aut mendosam aut male confectam reperis, cura! corrige! auge!
 • Si paginam novam brevissimam creare in mentem habes, recogita ... An potius textum longiorem scribere oportet? An prius aliam paginam, iam exstantem, augere potes?

Quo dicto, Vicipaediani liberi sumus. Scribe igitur sine metu, sicut iam scripsisti! [en] Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 18:35, 1 Ianuarii 2016 (UTC)Reply

Blocking a handful of IP addresses won't do it. In the past ten months, the source indicated here has invaded numerous articles, including Abortus, Aegyptus, Anaesthesia, Anura, Aqua, Cairus, Charta, Chemia, Chirurgia, Civitates Foederatae Americae, Consilium securitatis, Culicidae, Dammam, David (rex), Diarium, Euglena, Faeces, Herba, Hyoscyamus niger, Ignis, Laboratorium, Linguae mundi, Lympha, Medicina, Medicina dentium, Manufollium, Muhafaza, Musca, Primum auxilium, Rectangulum, Salus, Silva, Sutura chirurgica, Systema periodicum, Therapia, Tramen, Ucraina, Valetudinarium, Vermis, Vesper, and Virus immunodeficientiae humanae, returning to several of them from time to time after the lapse of weeks or months. The insertions may not exactly be "mindless." They (and their target articles) frequently have a medical theme, patently having something to do with lab experiments, but it's unknown whether the insertions are personal memoranda or interpersonal messages. ¶ The unwanted edits have come from IP addresses including (if they've been transcribed correctly):

Most (or all?) of these addresses have been used on a single day only, sometimes in multiple articles on that day; for example, Charta and Laboratorium via 197.38.21.236 on 26 November 2018. The longest temporal gap seems to have been between 26 August 2018 (Tramen) and 29 October 2018 (Sutura chirurgica). The peak of activity seems to have been May & June 2018. Some of the extraneous edits have been self-reverted within minutes, or even within one minute. ¶ It has often been thought that the best solution would be to block all IP addresses starting with the digits 37 and 41 and 197, but people in the know have said that such an action would be inadvisable or impossible. Maybe you or others will have ideas. More could be written privately. IacobusAmor (disputatio) 13:11, 9 Martii 2019 (UTC)Reply

You'll remember, Iacobe, that we discussed this a few months ago, as a result of which I mentioned this problem at Meta. Possibly my report helped, possibly not: anyway, we have, since then, been getting help on this from Billinghurst and colleagues. The range block advised above -- you'll have seen my response to it -- will target the great majority of those addresses, and we can do a similar thing with the others if they become active again. Your feedback is needed - Improving the Content Translation tool

recensere

Hello Friend,

Apologies as this message is not in your native language.

The WMF language team is reaching out to you based on your position as an admin in the Latin Wikipedia. In particular, we want to learn about your experience, the issues you encounter with articles created with Content translation.

We appreciate the great work you are doing in Latin Wikipedia to ensure standard and quality articles are not compromised. However, it is a big task to encounter content that is not standard daily, and a difficult decision to delete them because they fall below standard.

Our observations

We noticed that articles created with the Content Translation tool in your wiki are deleted more frequently than in other Wikipedias. We say this because, from our statistics, 5360 articles were added to Latin Wikipedia in 2020. Out of the above figure, only 68 of them were translated using the Content Translation tool. 17 of the articles added with Content translation were deleted. Therefore, the tool's low usage and the deletion rate signals a problem or deficiencies peculiar to your Wikipedia. The Content Translation tool can increase content creation in your Wikipedia and is an excellent way to efficiently introduce newcomers to adding content and expand on existing ones.

Our request

So, we want you to participate in a survey. The survey will give us insight into how we can improve the tool to get quality articles and reduce the number of deletion, hence making your work easier.

Please follow this link to the Survey:

Take the Survey
To know how the information collected from the survey will be used, please read the Privacy Statement.

If you are not comfortable with taking the survey, that is fine. You can still provide us with feedback in this thread or via email on the following questions:

 • What makes the articles created with content translation fall below standard in your Wikipedia?
 • What are the common mistakes that editors that use content translation make?
 • How do you think we can improve the  Content Translation tool that will help you with your work or make your task easier and reduce deletion of articles in Latin Wikipedia?

So please, feel free to give us feedback in any way that is most convenient for you.

Thank you so much, as we look forward to your response

How we will see unregistered users

recensere

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Inactivity policy

recensere

Hi, Aylin. I hope you're OK.

In accord with general Wikimedia security, we have to suspend admin rights for magistratus who have been inactive for a certain period: we have defined this period as 12 months. If you want to retain your admin rights without interruption, the simplest thing to do is to make an edit on Vicipaedia within one month from now (before 20 January 2023). If you don't do this, your admin tools will be suspended on that date.

You are always welcome to Vicipaedia, now and later. Your account remains active, and if after 20 January you want to take up your magistracy again, there's no formality: just ask (on my talk page for example) and your tools will be restored.

Have a happy holiday period and a good New Year! Andrew Dalby (disputatio) 14:31, 20 Decembris 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi Andrew,
thanks for bringing this to my attention - has it already been a year since I made my last edit?! 2022 has been indeed a busy year for me so far. I'll certainly need to try to contribute to Vicipaedia more often - this project is still very dear to my heart.
