The Mythril Clip is Red XIII's initial weapon in Final Fantasy VII. It is has three Materia slots, two of which are linked. In comparison to other weapons available at the time, it has strong stats, particularly for Magic.

Like all Red XIII's weapons, Mythril Clip is not rendered or visible in-game, and also cannot be thrown.

Mechanics[]

As the Mythril Clip has a base Attack stat bonus of 24, the base damage for physical attacks when the Mythril Clip is equipped is in the following formula:

where "Level" is Red XIII's current level and "Strength" is his Strength stat. The Mythril Clip also has an Attack% (Accuracy) of 100%, and grants a +6 bonus to Red XIII's Magic stat.

Use[]

The Mythril Clip is initially equipped by Red XIII, and is ahead of weapons available for other characters upon reaching Kalm in terms of both its Attack and Magic stat. This gives Red XIII an edge when he first joins the party, and its three Materia slots make him a good choice for equipping Magic Materia.

The Mythril Clip has three Materia slots. By default, Red XIII comes equipped with Fire, All, and Sense Materia. The Magic boost provided by Red XIII's weapon exceeds almost any weapon available for another character at the time (Aeris's Striking Staff is the best possible), and Red XIII is among the best mages at this point along with Cloud and Aeris. Therefore, it is advisable to keep these Materia, possibly swapping Fire for a Magic Materia of another element to take advantage of some enemies' elemental weaknesses when needed, and use Red XIII for offensive spellcasting (with physical attacks to supplement when conserving MP). Red XIII can also take advantage of this to equip a Restore Materia and heal the party. His spellcasting ability is immediately useful against the Hundred Gunner boss where melee attacks are not available.

Though Mythril Clip provides a good edge for Red XIII early on, it is quickly outclassed, beginning with Diamond Pin. As such, it should still be replaced quickly if the player intends to use Red XIII.

Etymology[]

The word "mythril" or "mithril" is a metal found in many fantasy worlds. It was originally introduced by the fantasy writings of J. R. R. Tolkien, being present in his Middle-earth. It resembles silver but is stronger than steel, and much lighter in weight than either. The author first wrote of it in The Lord of the Rings, and it is retrospectively mentioned in the third, revised edition of The Hobbit in 1966. In the first 1937 edition, the mail shirt given to Bilbo is described as being made of "silvered steel". The name mithril comes from two words in Sindarin—mith, meaning "grey" or "mist", and ril meaning "glitter".
