From ulunan with elision of /l/, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *qulun-an (place where one rests the head: wooden headrest). Compare Ilongot unan, Kapampangan ulnan, Bikol Central ulunan, Cebuano unlan, Hiligaynon ulunan, Waray-Waray ulunan, Maranao olonan, Higaonon uluna, Tausug ūan, and Malagasy ondana.[1][2]
