[edit]From Proto-Polynesian *renga from Proto-Oceanic *renga "turmeric", due to similar looking fleshy stems and rhizomes or tubers. Cognate with Hawaiian lena, Tahitian reʻa, Samoan lega and Tongan enga all meaning "turmeric".[1]
