From Proto-Vietic *s-ŋaːjʔ, from Proto-Austroasiatic *cŋaːjˀ. Cognate with Chut [Rục] ciŋaːj³, Thavung səŋə̀aj⁴, Khmer ឆ្ងាយ (chngaay) and Halang hơ'ngai.
