From Proto-Italic *molgeō, from earlier *molgejō, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂molǵéyeti, iterative verb from *h₂melǵ- (with mulsum after mulsī). Cognate with English milk, Ancient Greek ἀμέλγω (amélgō).
