[edit]From Old Norse linr, from Proto-Germanic *linaz, *linwaz (“soft”), from Proto-Indo-European *leyh₂- (“to dwindle; lean, slim”). Cognate with Old High German len (“mild, soft”), Middle High German lin (“lukewarm, dull, bad”), Dutch lenig (“supple, bendsome”).
