From Middle High German besuochen (to seek, use, visit, investigate), from Old High German bisuohhen (to examine, check, try, inquire), from Proto-West Germanic *bisōkijan. By surface analysis, be- +‎ suchen. Cognate with Dutch bezoeken (to visit, see), Swedish besöka (to visit, go to see), English beseech (to beg, enquire).
