[edit]From ad- + *ūlos (“tail”), which is from Proto-Indo-European *h₂welh₁- (“hair”), see also Lithuanian valai (“horsehair of the tail”) and Sanskrit वाल (vā́la). The original sense described the wagging of a tail like a fawning dog.
