  • (Friesland, hamlet) Attested as Zuider Buiren in 1718. Calque of West Frisian Suderbuorren, a compound of suder (southern) and the plural form of buer (house, cottage).
  • (Groningen) Attested as Zuidhoek in 1867. Compound of zuider (southern, south-) and either the plural form of boer (farmer) or buur (house, cottage). The element zuider was added to distinguish the settlement from Noorderburen.
  • (Friesland, neighbourhood) The neighbourhood is named after the hamlet.
