User talk:Jimp
Hello, and welcome to Wiktionary!
If you have edited Wikipedia, you probably already know some basics, but Wiktionary does have a few conventions of its own. Please take a moment to learn our basics before jumping in.
First, all articles should be in our standard format, even if they are not yet complete. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with it. You can use one of our pre-defined article templates by typing the name of a non-existent article into the search box and hitting 'Go'.
Notice that article titles are case-sensitive and are not capitalized unless, like proper nouns, they are ordinarily capitalized (Poland or January). Also, take a moment to familiarize yourself with our criteria for inclusion, since Wiktionary is not an encyclopedia. Don't go looking for a Village pump – we have a Beer parlour. Note that while Wikipedia likes redirects, Wiktionary deletes most redirects, (especially spelling variations) in favor of short entries. Please do not copy entries here from Wikipedia if they are in w:CAT:MtW; request the full history import instead, at WT:ID.
Finally, you can link Wikipedia pages, including your user page, using [[w:pagename]], {{wikipedia}}, or {{wikipediapar|pagename}}. Please do not create redirects to Wikipedia pages, though. They don't work.
We hope you enjoy editing Wiktionary and being a Wiktionarian. --Connel MacKenzie 16:14, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
Appendices
[edit]Please do not subdivide all the appendices into little categories. We categorize by different standards here than those used on Wikipedia. Subcategorizing the place names and given name appendices is probably a good idea because of the specialized subject matter, but most appendices will have topical categories already. It is wasted effort to create a second duplicate set of appendix categories. For example, the Appendix on Planets can be categorized in Category:Astronomy or Category:Planets. There's no need to have another category for the Appendices on Astronomy, just put them in Astronomy. It's better to find an existing topical category than to create wholly new ones in most cases. --EncycloPetey 19:00, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
Just a quick note about your (? It is yours, right?) new template: en.wikt: convention is to start template names in lower-case, using upper-case template names only in a small handful of templates that would have naming conflicts otherwise.
That said, the template looks like a good addition. Could you please move Template:Rhymes to Template:rhymes and fix WhatLinksHere?
TIA, --Connel MacKenzie 16:30, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
- Whoops. I meant [move], not cut-n-paste. Would you like me to delete/merge them now? Also, would you like me to run $python replace.py "{{Rhymes" "{{rhymes" for you? --Connel MacKenzie 17:53, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
- "Template:rhymes" was a redirect to Template:Rhymes, you can move a page over a redirect (if it is to the page you are moving). E.g. you can reverse a redirect with a page move. (Yes, I know this isn't obvious!) Robert Ullmann 18:13, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
- OK, all done. Thanks! --Connel MacKenzie 18:51, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
Use of /e/ in English
[edit]You have to keep in mind that Cambridge has redefined the use of /e/ for the purposes of their dictionary. They explain their usage at the outset of the dictionary because it differs from conventional use of IPA. See the Beer parlour discussion on why they do this and how they can get away with it in an English-only dictionary. --EncycloPetey 00:44, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
I don't quite understand what's going on here. Quite a lot of that information appears to be unrelated to the title, and not even Dutch. I'd like to move Transwiki:List of Dutch given names to Appendix:Dutch given names, but the current page is occupying the space. Dmcdevit 00:27, 4 February 2007 (UTC)
- Never mind. I've stuck the previous content at Appendix:Given names as a holding cell and moved the list of Dutch names over the redirect. Dmcdevit 20:39, 4 February 2007 (UTC)
Renaming AHD?
[edit]As one of the people who regularly works in pronunciations, I thought you'd like to know that a VOTE has been initiated regarding the name of our "AHD" pronunciation system. --EncycloPetey 06:07, 4 February 2007 (UTC)
footnotes
[edit]We don't use foonotes. Period. All references and citations are in-line, except for the ones that apply to the whole entry, listed at the end of a language section without numbers. Robert Ullmann 16:14, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry to snap quite that much, but I'd just been cleaning up an entry that used ref tags all over (inside a header?! urk). Robert Ullmann 16:29, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
Code and dashes, still!
[edit]Jimp, here's a message I've just left at Dicklyon's talk page:
Dick—Sorry to harp on that sentence in the MOS about code:
- “In contexts such as code, where the text is intended to be copied and executed or evaluated, the ordinary hyphen works better and is preferred.”
Do you mean “computer code” (not Morse code)? Can this be narrowed by specifying? And other parts of the sentence look redundant. I have in mind:
- “Only in computer code, where the text is intended to be copied, is the hyphen acceptable, for technical reasons.”
Any comments? 203.217.45.229 08:58, 14 July 2007 (UTC)
Can thin spaces be non-breaking?
[edit]Hi Jimp
Given that we both know that thin spaces are optimal for all of the "spaced" items specified in the MOS, we need to deal with the non-break space issue too. I don't see how you can insert both html codes at once. That will give a normal and a thin space together, as you'll see below: the first is thin space, the second is (normal-space) non-breaking, and the third contains both (larger still). Hmmm.

You're no doubt familiar with the "no wrap" template, which is supposed to perform the same function as the non-breaking space html code. But when I pasted in an example from the nowrap template page, no luck, it produces redlinks. This was going to be my solution to the need for two codes.
Any suggestions? (Tony1) 203.217.45.229 10:41, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
Hello there, recently the template {{a}}
was setup to standardise the way we label pronunciations with accents. The template takes a sigle argument which if it exists will display the content of a relevant accent template e.g. {{accent:RP}}
. The template also deals with the formatting of the accent label also. Please see bettor for an example. BTW all the accent templates (including those not used by {{a}}
have all been categorised under Category:Accent templates for ease of reference.

Hi, you've nominated this templated for deletion but did not list it on WT:RFDO. Could you please provide a reason? Thanks! DAVilla 03:03, 25 September 2007 (UTC)
- Nevermind, I've found it and reformatted the headings so the link works. DAVilla 03:05, 25 September 2007 (UTC)
Rhymes
[edit]By our rules, refill doesn't rhyme with uphill, because the stress is on the first syllable. The word refill would go on Rhymes: -ifɪl, if such a page existed. --EncycloPetey 03:15, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry, I should have been more specific: The noun sense's pronunciation does not rhyme, because the stress is on the first syllable. --EncycloPetey 03:18, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
- True, my mistake, meant to have deleted one of those rhymes. Jimp 03:19, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
