[edit]From Middle High German tübel, from Old High German tubil, from Proto-Germanic *dubilaz, probably derived from *dubjaną (whence English to dub). The modern onset d- is Central and Low German (compare Middle Low German dövel and see the obsolete variant above). Cognate with Dutch deuvel, perhaps also English dowel (see there).
