From Middle Persian [script needed] (pys /⁠pēs⁠/, mottled, leprous; leper). Akin to Old Armenian պիսակ (pisak), an Iranian borrowing.

Debated, either from Middle Persian [script needed] (ptwʾsk' /⁠paywāsag⁠/, purse, wallet). Akin to Old Armenian պայուսակ (payusak, purse, pouch), an Iranian borrowing. Or from Sanskrit पद + अंश (pada + aṃśa, quarter + part, piece) via Hindustani پَیسے / पैसे (paise, money, cash, coin), akin to Pashto پیسې and Baluchi پیسہ.
