[edit]Inherited from Middle Persian [script needed] (bxtg /baxtag/, “divided; bruised; castrated”), from Proto-Iranian *baxta-ka- (“to break”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeg- (“to break”). Sense 2 developed from پنبه پخته (panbe-ye paxte, “processed cotton”).[1]
