[edit]Noun
[edit]лю́стра • (ljústra) f inan (genitive лю́стры, nominative plural лю́стры, genitive plural люстр)
- chandelier, lustre (UK), luster (US) (a branched, often ornate, lighting fixture suspended from the ceiling)
- 1973, Венедикт Ерофеев, “Москва. Ресторан Курского вокзала”, in Москва — Петушки; English translation from H. William Tjalsma, transl., Moscow to the End of the Line, Evanston: Northwestern University Press, 1980:
- Хорошая люстра. Но уж слишком тяжёлая. Если она сейчас сорвётся и упадёт кому-нибудь на голову, — будет страшно больно… Да нет, наверно, даже и не больно: пока она срывается и летит, ты сидишь и, ничего не подозревая, пьёшь, например, херес. А как она до тебя долетела — тебя уже нет в живых. Тяжёлая это мысль: ты сидишь, а на тебя сверху люстра. Очень тяжёлая мысль…
- Xorošaja ljustra. No už sliškom tjažólaja. Jesli ona sejčas sorvjótsja i upadjót komu-nibudʹ na golovu, — budet strašno bolʹno… Da net, naverno, daže i ne bolʹno: poka ona sryvajetsja i letit, ty sidišʹ i, ničevo ne podozrevaja, pʹjošʹ, naprimer, xeres. A kak ona do tebja doletela — tebja uže net v živyx. Tjažólaja eto myslʹ: ty sidišʹ, a na tebja sverxu ljustra. Očenʹ tjažólaja myslʹ…
- It was a good chandelier. But really too heavy. If it should break away and fall on someone’s head, it’d be terribly painful. Well, no, probably not even painful. While it’s tearing away and falling, you're sitting, not suspecting a thing—drinking sherry, for instance. But as soon as it hits you, you’re dead. A weighty thought, that. . .you’re sitting there and a chandelier falls from above.
