Formats in defunct stations?
[edit]You said for quite a few defunct stations that it has been recently decided not to put “defunct” as the format. When & where was this decided, by whom? It makes no logical sense for a defunct radio station to have a format, as it no longer has a license. Thanks in advance for letting me know where I can find out where & when this was decided. Stereorock (talk) 14:04, 2 February 2025 (UTC)
- There hasn't been any discussion or other centralized spot that led to this, at least to my knowledge. Rather, I recently noticed that Sammi Brie, who in recent years has been working to significantly improve the quality of broadcast station articles, removed "defunct" notations from the format field of the infoboxes in KSWH-LP, WPJB, and KLOA-LP earlier this month, saying
defunct is not a format
; in at least this first case, this was part of an overall cleanup of infobox clutter. She might have more to say about this than I could possibly provide; I've simply gone along with this idea, since the presence of any "last airdate" field (and past tense in the article lead, etc.) generally makes it clear if the subject station is defunct. WCQuidditch ☎ ✎ 19:50, 2 February 2025 (UTC) - @Stereorock, consider infoboxes about other kinds of no-longer-extant entities (these are random examples):
- A defunct railway station infobox might list the number of platforms, e.g. Charlton Kings railway station. There is no longer a station on the site or platforms. Do we list "Defunct" as the number of platforms?
- An article on a deceased person might list an infobox, e.g. Philip W. Anderson (film editor). Is his occupation "Deceased" now that he's no longer working?

- Sammi Brie, Wcquidditch The defunct railroad station has a status field as “disused”, which would be equivalent to defunct. Also, radio stations usually have several formats throughout their histories, so it may not always be a news/talk station, for example. To me, a better solution is to strike the format field altogether. Stereorock (talk) 22:16, 2 February 2025 (UTC)
