Editing with a conflict of interest and paid editing disclosures

[edit]

Per your note on my talk page that you are editing at the behest of Derwin Pereira, please follow the policies and guidelines outlined below:

Information icon

Hello Absent.Editor. The nature of your edits gives the impression you have an undisclosed financial stake in promoting a topic, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. Paid advocacy is a category of conflict of interest (COI) editing that involves being employed (or being compensated in any way) by a person, group, company or organization to promote their interests. Paid advocacy on Wikipedia must be disclosed even if you have not specifically been asked to edit Wikipedia. Undisclosed paid advocacy is prohibited by our policies on neutral point of view and what Wikipedia is not, and is an especially serious type of COI; the Wikimedia Foundation regards it as a "black hat" practice akin to black-hat search-engine optimization.

Paid advocates are strongly discouraged from direct article editing, and should instead propose changes on the talk page of the article in question if an article exists. If the article does not exist, paid advocates are strongly discouraged from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly.

Regardless, if you are receiving or expect to receive compensation for your edits, broadly construed, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:Absent.Editor. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=Absent.Editor|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}. If I am mistaken – you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits – please state that in response to this message. Otherwise, please provide the required disclosure. In either case, do not edit further until you answer this message. .-- Ponyobons mots 19:20, 10 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings. I am not being paid for the edits to the Derwin John Pereira Wiki page. He's a friend who wanted an improved page and I have been trying to help. Absent.Editor (talk) 20:58, 12 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If you know the subject of the article personally, you have a conflict of interest, whether you are being paid or not. Diannaa (talk) 00:53, 13 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Diannaa. Thank you for your thoughts. I hope you will note that I am not the original creator of the draft page. My attempts are merely to improve the quality of the original draft, which I hope I have done. The following are also true:
- I am not being coached or instructed as to how to format the page or what content to add to it.
- I have not added any unnecessary detail to overwhelm something negative--in fact I added links to a published article that was against the best interests of Derwin Pereira.
- I have taken great care to make sure the page is fact-based and I have used neutral language so that the page is not promotional.
I am not aware of any key facts that are missing.
- I have done my own factual research and the many links I have added demonstrate that task.
- No one has given me sources or instructed me in the content creation.
- To the best of my knowledge, all content is now properly sourced.
I hope this information clears concerns about COI. Absent.Editor (talk) 14:50, 13 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
