[edit]I read not remember where that the 2nd World War, no British soldier was called "Tommy" and any soldier German was called "Jerry", hence for a lottery to choose the name of the duo, was as "Tom and Jerry "... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.78.253.230 (talk) 14:58, 24 November 2010 (UTC)
Fair use rationale for Image:FlyingSorceress3.jpg
[edit]Image:FlyingSorceress3.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Pun?
[edit]Even though "Tom" is his given name, and "Cat" is his family name, it really isn't a pun on "tomcat", it's actually based on it. --PJ Pete March 17, 2008.

WikiProject Cats
[edit]I've thought of removing the WikiProject Cats template because this is about an animated cartoon character, even though Tom is a cat. On the Talk:Oswald the Lucky Rabbit page, the template for Mammals was removed for the same reason I'm stating. PopKorn Kat talk here Stuff I did 00:40, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
Origin of names
[edit]Note: Tom's name was not inspired by the tomcat English expression, which means male cat!
It was the animator John Carr who, in an internal competition, sponsored by the MGM, suggested Tom and Jerry in honor of the British soldiers and German World War II: Tommy was the name given to a British soldier and Jerry was the name given to a German soldier who was to become much easier and better identificaçãod and every one!
And, by the way, he received $ 50.00 prize for the input!
If you doubt what I am saying and claiming, can play there on Bing, Yahoo! Search and Google Search as well, "John Carr" "Tom and Jerry"!— Preceding unsigned comment added by 189.82.111.190 (talk • contribs) 15:05, July 30, 2016

- Yeah, kind of a bummer to go that far with a detailed explanation then dump the research burden into our laps... Cyphoidbomb (talk) 22:17, 30 July 2016 (UTC)
blue/grey? blue? grey?
[edit]After two IPs started a back and forth about blue vs. grey, I have restored the "blue/grey" that was there previously. (Actually, I've changed it to "blue/gray", as this article is in American English where "gray" is more common).
To settle this longer-term, we'll need a reliable source. If no reliable sources have anything to say about it, I'll eventually remove it entirely and we just won't say anything.
(For what little it's worth, the current image is RGB 138/137/138, which is a medium gray. A quick Google shows this is pretty typical, but there are instances where he's quite blue.) - SummerPhDv2.0 13:34, 20 June 2017 (UTC)

Tom (Tom and Jerry) → Tom (fictional cat) – Per reason at Talk:Jerry (Tom and Jerry). King Prithviraj II (talk) 20:21, 5 October 2017 (UTC)
- Oppose. Disambiguator does not comply with the standard disambiguation choice flow. First choice would be Tom (character)
(that doesn't exist?), then if that is ambiguous, the choice would be the subject which the character is most associated, which is Tom and Jerry.Unless the article is moved to Tom (character),The current title is correct and meets current precedence for other related disambiguators. Steel1943 (talk) 21:46, 5 October 2017 (UTC)- With the previous comment in mind, I created Tom (character). Steel1943 (talk) 21:51, 5 October 2017 (UTC)
- Weak revert move back to Tom Cat per WP:NATURALDAB. Seems this page was moved to its current title without discussion back in March of this year. Steel1943 (talk) 21:58, 5 October 2017 (UTC)
- Revert - Per Steel1943.ZXCVBNM (TALK) 00:39, 6 October 2017 (UTC)
- Revert back to the natural disambiguation used previously. The cartoon cat and mouse are not the only fictional "Tom and Jerry" duo, nor even the only cartoon one, so this fails on specificity. The previous title was superior. I have added a hatnote for tomcat regardless. 64.105.98.115 (talk) 13:05, 6 October 2017 (UTC)

"Sr."?
[edit]Where does this generational suffix come from? The article doesn't seem to have a source for it or mention a homonymous son. ★Trekker (talk) 09:27, 19 May 2023 (UTC)
