Talk:NYY
This should be a redirect
[edit]@Shhhnotsoloud, in your edit summary reverting my edit, you said "Abbreviations rarely have a primary topic, especially if the abbreviation isn't actually mentioned in the article". I feel like this is one of those rare cases. A Google search for "NYY" turns up at least 10 pages of the New York Yankees and New York Yankees-related results. Also, the other two pages' pageviews are dwarfed by the Yankees, by a factor of at most 500:1. In fact, I think the other two articles mentioned are so obscure that a disambiguation page isn't necessary, and a hatnote would suffice. Taking a look at the WikiNav statistics, Every single viewer (unless i'm reading the charts wrong) is looking for the New York Yankees. As such, I think this page should redirect to the New York Yankees. mwwv converse∫edits 15:50, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks @Mwwv: You should request a page move of NYY to NYY (disambiguation), with NYY then redirecting to New York Yankees (see WP:RM). In my opinion the case will not be strong if "NYY" isn't mentioned at New York Yankees but a requested move would ascertain consensus. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 08:28, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
Requested move 3 July 2024
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: page not moved. Arbitrarily0 (talk) 16:40, 10 July 2024 (UTC)
NYY → NYY (disambiguation) – Per my thoughts that NYY should be a redirect above. mwwv converse∫edits 13:14, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
- Support Even Google Scholar (when omitting quotation marks) shows there's a primary topic for this trigram. Hameltion (talk | contribs) 01:57, 4 July 2024 (UTC
- Support, the other topics are not notable. In the other hand, the three letter code is widely used by the most valued and most recognized baseball team in the major leagues of the United States and Canada. 129.222.64.139 (talk) 04:45, 5 July 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose. Abbreviations rarely have a primary topic, especially if the abbreviation isn't actually mentioned in the article. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 12:41, 5 July 2024 (UTC)
- There’s no WP:MANUALOFSTYLE guideline (or any guideline) that prevents an abbreviation to be the primary topic; in this case if policy doesn’t prevent the use of abbreviations but rather supports enduring usage and notability, it’s fair to act accordingly. 187.200.71.190 (talk) 14:27, 5 July 2024 (UTC)
- But see MOS:DABACRO "Many pages serve primarily to disambiguate short letter combinations that can represent various acronyms and initialisms. When considering articles to include in the list, it is important that each individual entry is referred to by its respective abbreviation within its article" Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 11:28, 6 July 2024 (UTC)

- Oppose. No primary redirect unless you're an American sports fan. Most other people wouldn't have a clue that the abbreviation was used for the team. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:53, 9 July 2024 (UTC)

NYY → NYY (disambiguation) – Make way for a WP:primary redirect to New York Yankees:
- Overwhelming outgoing Wikinav traffic to the baseball team.
- The other articles are partial title matches.
- Much like the Smallfoot discussion I held recently. 𝚈𝚘𝚟𝚝 (𝚝𝚊𝚕𝚔𝚟𝚝) 01:57, 5 February 2025 (UTC) — Relisting. ~/Bunnypranav:<ping> 12:49, 12 February 2025 (UTC)

- Support. Clear primary topic. NYY is the standard abbreviation for the team seen on every TV broadcast. The train station code and language code are obscure. Adumbrativus (talk) 06:36, 7 February 2025 (UTC)

- We don't cover any other uses of the abbreviation NYY other than the baseball team, train station and language. The latter two are far more obscure. mwwv converse∫edits 13:49, 7 February 2025 (UTC)
- Strong support it's not WP:NOTWHATFIRSTCOMESTOMIND, and we don't make PT determinations in a vacuum. Sure, only American sports fans probably would think to type in NYY to get the Yankees. But no one else would use the acronym at all. Might as well give them what they want. Red Slash 02:11, 12 February 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose per WP:DABACRO - this is not an official abbreviation for the sports team. SportingFlyer T·C 08:18, 12 February 2025 (UTC)
- WP:DABACRO requires only that the abbreviation is mentioned in the target article, and that only needs a verifiability, not necessarily officiality. [1][2] are both reliable sources which make use of the abbreviation, so it is clearly in common circulation. Based5290 :3 (talk) 19:47, 12 February 2025 (UTC)
- I'd dispute that an abbreviation used in a box score is evidence of some sort of primary redirect. SportingFlyer T·C 00:40, 14 February 2025 (UTC)
- Searching on Bsky in English and Reddit give almost exclusively results referring to the Yankees, and Google essentially interprets NYY to be the Yankees. Ordinarily, I would be wary of falling into Americentrism, but given that the competition for NYY is a station code for a minor Indian train station and an ISO code for a language spoken by just over a million people, I think I can safely say that 99% of people who put it in NYY want the Yankees. - Support per nom. Clear case of a primary redirect. Mdewman6 (talk) 00:01, 14 February 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose per last time. In the intervening period "NYY" still isn't mentioned at New York Yankees, which should have been a priority before re-running an RM. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 17:11, 15 February 2025 (UTC). Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 17:11, 15 February 2025 (UTC)
- I added the abbreviation a couple days ago, but it got reverted yesterday. Maybe there's some policy on mentioning abbreviations in the lead that I've missed, but if the abbreviation were left out of the Yankees article, we would also have to strike it from the disambiguation page per WP:DABACRO, which I think is absurd given that reliable sources clearly make use of NYY.
