City or town?
[edit]Is there any administrative reason to call Gagra a city? Otherwise I will change it to 'town'. sephia karta 15:43, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
- I don't see any. Most languages don't have the city/town distinction so calling an entity either way is largely arbitrary imho... Go ahead and change it if you feel it's necessary. Alæxis¿question? 15:55, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
- My reasoning was that, to my knowledge, in English, city implies either 'city rights' or a population significantly higher than that of Gagra. sephia karta 16:08, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
Location Map
[edit]- In this article it is already shown other map depicting Gagra's location in Abkhazia, two similar maps is not relevant, will be better if we add its location in Georgia, as it's done in other articles. --g. balaxaZe★ 12:57, 24 April 2014 (UTC)
- The location in Abkhazia map adds value as on the map of Georgia Gagra can only be shown as a point, rather than in its true shape. Since you propose changes to several Abkhazia-related articles it's best to discuss it at the Abkhazia WikiProject. Alæxis¿question? 07:31, 29 April 2014 (UTC)
No info of Abkhazian Genocide
[edit]While pro-Russian, pro-Kartvelian trivia is spread on all of the history section.
First of all, it is not western Georgia, it is Abkhazia for more than 2 millenia (Check Roman names of the region). Secondly Abkhazia was never annexed/conquered by Ottomans. Abasgia( safe for Apsilia kind of feudal anarchist system and Sadza with its local princes) were ruled by Acba dynasty till 1864. If you have such a claim you have to provide evidence, a few castles are not evidence(Britain has US bases all over). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.172.37.234 (talk) 20:04, 29 December 2014 (UTC)

Etymology section
[edit]I am reaching out to ask if it would be possible to properly cite the sources referenced in V. Kvarchija's theory, since i can't seem to find it. From my understanding, there appears to be a tendency among some Abkhazian historians and linguists to adopt a biased approach regarding the toponyms of the regions.
To gain a clearer perspective, I would greatly appreciate it if you could provide the specific source about V. Kvarchija's theory.
Thank you for your time. I look forward to your responses.

- Also please provide information about Bondaryev... It seems to be directing me to somehow a blog Erudite Veteran (talk) 14:57, 16 January 2025 (UTC)
- From what i could find, the theory about Gagra toponym originating from Gagaa is linked to researcher Z.Danelia and the family name of Gagaa ever inhabiting territory of Gagra is not confirmed, nor is it confirmed if the family is of Abkhazian origin or other Northwest Caucasian or Kartvelian or else. Even their existence to begin with seems to be under lots of questions. Erudite Veteran (talk) 15:04, 16 January 2025 (UTC)
- From my experience, biases regarding toponyms and other aspects of history are quite common all across Caucasus. You can find Kvarchia's book here.
- If it's Danelia who suggested the Gagaa clan version first then we should replace Bondarev with Danelia. It seems like it's not incompatible with both Svan and Abkhaz versions as it doesn't explain the origin of the word.
- Personally, I have no opinion on which version is more likely to be correct. That's why I wrote in the edit summary that unless we have good sources (ideally scholarly sources less impacted by local biases) that prefer a certain version we should treat them approximately equally per WP:BALANCE. Alaexis¿question? 22:11, 16 January 2025 (UTC)
- I made some changes. Tell me what you think Erudite Veteran (talk) 12:50, 17 January 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for adding more information! I think it's much better now. I've also made some minor copyediting changes, hope it's alright. Alaexis¿question? 20:31, 17 January 2025 (UTC)
