Older usage?
[edit]Elektron is the name of a commercial Magnesium alloy, but I see references, like from the 1930s to an aircraft alloy called "Elektron". These references are in Russian literature, talking about it as if it is a well known metal. Anyone know what these older articles are refering too? Is it like duraluminum, just a very old commerical product? (PS, thanks for not deleting this article) DonPMitchell (talk) 04:13, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- Ah, answered my own question, it is the same stuff. The company invented this stuff in the 1930s. —Preceding unsigned comment added by DonPMitchell (talk • contribs) 04:18, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
- from this webpage, "The commercial possibilities of the electrolytic method of production were first exploited in 1909 by a German company, Chemische Fabrik Griesheim Elektron." Paypwip (talk) 20:51, 12 August 2008 (UTC)
Disadvantages and safety
[edit]The article does NOT highlight the highly undesirable property of those alloys: Their tendency to burn fiercely once the ignition temperature is reached. Even when the article correctly mentions their use in making incendiary bombs, one could conceivably think the material would be finely divided in those incendiary bombs, but in other uses, such as employing them for structural purposes it is needed to point out this disadvantage; and therefore explain their limited use. To have a more clear picture of this, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1955_Le_Mans_disaster . Amclaussen. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.100.180.20 (talk) 16:06, 11 June 2012 (UTC)
