Verb
editvét
- (intransitive) to wrong someone, to do wrong to someone (-nak/-nek, ellen)
- Synonyms: árt, megkárosít, megsért
- Mit vétettem ellene? ― What have I done to him?
- Mit vétettek magának? ― What have they done to you? (formal)
- (intransitive) to transgress, violate, infringe a rule (ellen)
- (intransitive) to sin (against someone or something: ellen)
- (intransitive) to err, to make a mistake
Usage notes
editTraditionally the phrase to express “to make a mistake” includes the verb ejt or elkövet (i.e., hibát ejt, hibát követ el) or simply hibázik. However, sometimes the above meaning of vét (“to err”) is combined with the meaning of “mistake”, creating the redundant form hibát vét, which is proscribed, as it would literally mean approximately “to miss a mistake” (this meaning is still present in elvét (“to miss”)).[2]
