editFrom Proto-Polynesian *roŋo (compare with Maori rongo (“to hear”)),[1] from Proto-Oceanic *roŋoʀ (compare with Fijian rogo (“to hear”)), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *dəŋəʀ (compare with Javanese rungu, Malay dengar, Tagalog dinig all “to hear”).[2]
