editFrom Proto-Baltic *ledús, from Proto-Indo-European *ledʰ- (“ice”), perhaps the same as *leydʰ- (“slippery, to slide”). Cognates include Lithuanian lẽdas, dialectal ledùs, Old Prussian ladis, Latgalian lads, Russian лёд (ljod), Old Church Slavonic ледъ (ledŭ), Czech led, Polish lód.[1]
