editFrom a form of Proto-Indo-European *h₂eg- (“berry”), similar in form to Proto-Germanic *akraną (“small fruit of a tree”). Cognate with Tocharian B oko (“fruit”), English acorn, Lithuanian uoga (“berry”), etc.
