From Low German Bangbüx(e); analysable as bang (afraid) +‎ Büxe, the latter being a rarer variant of Buxe (trousers, pants). Compare Angsthase (thought to be an alteration of *Angsthose), Dutch bangebroek, English shit one's pants.
