Inherited from Proto-Turkic *yār- (to cleave, split); cognate with Azerbaijani yarmaq, Bashkir ярыу (yarıw), Chuvash ҫур (śur), Kazakh жару (jaru), Kyrgyz жаруу (jaruu), Turkmen ýarmak, Uyghur يارماق (yarmaq) and Uzbek yormoq.
