Hello 3strang3d! The discussion is indeed in the archive (here for reference), but I will copy it here so you can access the information more easily:

European Libraries

edit

Hi Kyra, As you may have seen from the discussion at Village Pump (policy), the site has now been removed from the blacklist and a number of editors (not I think previously involved in the area) have commented favourably on the links to the site. So I think it is clear there is a concensus that the links were useful - certainly in the case of those about a particular manuscript or rare book that led straight to that book on the site. I have strong reservations about Fleur's contributions myself (which I have expressed fairly forcefully at the Pump) but the subjects are all certainly notable & the links are normally to the only illustration (and often the only reasonable information) available. It's just her article style is so deficient.

Anyway it's time to take you up on your generous offer above to restore the links if this situation arose. Do let me know if you have any questions, as I know a fair bity about the subject area. I will gradually work up the stubs into something respectable. Thanks, Johnbod 02:38, 23 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I was actually referring to the *.touregypt.net links (never said anything about TEL), but I'd be more than happy to do these as well. I am going to guess you mean the following four articles, as they are the only articles I recall removing them from (if there are more, let me know):
Roman de la Rose --- Penny Dreadful --- Ptolemy's world map --- Geographia (Ptolemy)
I have checked the links, and the Roman de la Rose and Geographia (Ptolemy) links are malformed; the searches that they point to do not work (for me at least). I will still reinsert them into the article, if you wish. At the moment I won't because they are not doing anything. On the Penny Dreadful article, I have readded the link.
As for Ptolemy's world map... I have downloaded Ptolemy's world map (just the actual map portion, not the text pages), as it is in the public domain (written circa 150 according to the article) and will upload them to the Commons or Wikipedia, should you desire it. I have checked WP:PD, and I do not believe there is a problem with this; per the Bridgeman Art Library v. Corel Corp. Supreme Court case, scanning the book into digital format does not produce a new copyright. Also, per the case of Hearn v. Meyer, 664 F. Supp 832 (S.D.N.Y. 1987), "a work that is merely a "slavish copy", or even a restoration of an original public domain work is not subject to copyright protection" (source WP:PD). If you would like me to upload them to the Commons, let me know and I shall do so; this seems better than linking elsewhere. I hope you have a good day, and happy editing. Kyra~(talk) 01:05, 24 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yes please do upload, if the image quality is adequate - on many of theirs it isn't really. I see now that most of them were removed by Beetstra not you. I'm sure your right they are covered by Corel. I have done a couple, but really he or she should do them. I am mainly concerned with the individual manuscript items; not the more general search links like Roman de la Rose, where there are plenty of other sources. Thanks for the revert of my classmate's vandalism. It really annoys me that people consider it 'cool' to vandalize. Again, sorry for the inconvenience. Feel free to block this ip. HELP! =(

edit

hey KyraV i got a msg from wiki sent to my ip saying ppl have been making changes to pages that were totaly uncalled fore, i dunno how people are doing it maybe they are getting into my wirless network. what is something i can do to get them to stop? (Boygenius 13 03:15, 5 April 2007 (UTC))Reply

Hello Boygenius! If your wireless network is insecure, this is quite possibly the case, as more often than not with the default WiFi router, the wireless settings are such that anyone can access through it. While I do not know exactly how to secure your router (as I don't know what brand it is; there are differences) you can initially try going to http://192.168.0.1/ or http://192.0.0.1, or a similar address. To find out for certain, you can look on the router itself; there is usually the setup username/password on there as well. If it is not on there, you can go to the website of the router's manufacturer, and you should be able to find instructions there
Once you do get to the setup page, there is more often than not a link to a wireless setup page somewhere. Click that, and you should have the option to either restrict the usage to a set number of MAC addresses, or set up PSK/WEP encryption. Doing so will add another layer of security, as the network can then be easily accessed by you, but others would have a more difficult time (however if they have alot of free time they could try and brute force the connection; most will try and find an open access point, however).
I hope this information has been somewhat useful, however it is almost certain that you will find more detailed instructions on the router's manufacturer's website. I hope you manage to secure your network to prevent this from happening, and I hope you have a most wonderful day! Kyra~(talk) 05:44, 5 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Case of mistaken identity

In response to this message:

I do not know what or where the Jawatha Mosque is, nor have I ever looked at it's page on wikipedia let alone edited it! 86.135.188.223 16:28, 11 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

You can disregard that message; I just ran a WHOIS lookup on your IP address, and the description of the block that your address is in states that it is an IP pool. I am going to guess that your IP address is dynamically assigned, meaning your IP address frequently changes. In this situation, another user made the edit, and you eventually acquired the previous user's IP, and since the previous user did not check their messages, you were presented with the new messages bar. I hope this helps to alleviate any confusion you may have experienced, and I wish you a most wonderful day! Kyra~(talk) 22:05, 11 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Request your help in substantiating my revertions of removal of text on Ellie Caulkins Opera House

edit

You may recall, back in February, that Usertalk:62.85.192.81 continually reverted my inclusion of significant text about the Electronic libretto system on that article and you came to my support.

Eventually, we got three or four editors to agree that this text was valuable, and he/she stopped.

Would you please go to the Ellie Caulkins article and add your support for my position once again?

Blocking sock puppets

edit

Dear Kyra, I am contacting you about a problem that has afflicted parts of Wikipedia--the phenomenon of people who have been banned using Anonymous sockpuppets to bring back their fringe ideas on a certain page. I have contacted Markh, a knowledgeable user about this--see the long discussion on title 'Hyksos' and 'Hyksos again' here about him[1]. Basically someone from Germany was banned from contributing for his atrocious behavious and this person started popping up again using sockpuppets to push his fringe POV ideas--for instance on the Hyksos page here. I don't expect you to know all the literary issues.

I just ask you one question--since you are technically proficient on Wikipedia, do you know of a way to PLEASE BLOCK or automatically revert Anonymous IP user's contributions to the Hyksos web page...that way anyone who contributes here must first sign in and this person cannot hide in the shadows. This person's pattern is to consistently use different anonymous IPs to cram his ideas on a certain topic and no one can stop it! Knowledgeable users know who he is but his use of ANON IP's lets him get away with it. He also likes deleting out volumnious references on the topics by mainstream scholars. Its pathethic--and sad--that Wikipedia users must put up with this as you can see from Markh's page. Any ideas? Help! Leoboudv 00:46, 15 September 2007 (UTC) PS: You can also see my talk page: titles #36 and 37 on 'Hyksos' and Alleged Sockpuppet at Hyksos' on the matter. [2] As you can see, it is not only me who is disgusted about this person's behaviour. Can you do something on the Hyksos page please..? The Admins can't seem or are too busy to do anything about it. Leoboudv 00:49, 15 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Kyra hasn't edited since April, you may want to post this to WP:AN/I instead. --Versageek 00:57, 15 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom elections are now open!

edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
