Thomas William Rutland[1] (born February 1992[2]) is a British Labour Party politician who has been Member of Parliament (MP) for East Worthing and Shoreham since 2024.[3]

Early life and education
editRutland was educated at The Skinners' School in Tunbridge Wells and went on to graduate in philosophy, politics, and economics (PPE) at Jesus College, Oxford in 2013.[4][5] He was Junior Common Room president at Jesus College and subsequently president of Oxford University Student Union from 2013 to 2014.[6][7]
Early career
editRutland has worked as a press officer for the Financial Conduct Authority, Imperial College London, and the Prospect trade union.[8][9]
Political career
editRutland was a councillor for Streatham Common and Vale ward on Lambeth London Borough Council from 2022 to 2024.[10] When he resigned to concentrate on becoming an MP, local website Brixton Buzz accused him of being an absentee councillor, saying that "he attracted criticism from local residents after failing to show up for his local surgeries in Lambeth."[11]
In the 2024 United Kingdom general election, Rutland was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for East Worthing and Shoreham with 22,120 votes (45.1%) and a majority of 9,519 over the second place Conservative candidate.[12]
