The Anglo-Saxon church of St. Mary and All Saints and the nearby manor house have been in continuous human use since their origins as parts of a Roman villa.[3] The church is a grade I listed building.[4] The church was presumed to have been built around the 8-9th century.
It also had a Royal Air Force airfield called RAF Rivenhall.
On 1 October 1933 the civil parish was abolished and merged with Witham which became unparished in 1974. On 1 April 1982 Rivenhall became a parish again.[5]
