Lazarus Hangula was vice-chancellor of the University of Namibia (UNAM), from 2004 to 2018. He replaced Peter Katjavivi, who left to become an ambassador for Namibia. Hangula earned his M.A. and Ph.D. (both cum laude) from the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz in Germany.[1] Before being appointed vice-chancellor he served in various other roles at the UNAM, including Pro vice-chancellor for Academic Affairs and Research. His other appointments include serving as a member of the National Council for Higher Education and as an ex-officio member of the Namibia Qualifications Authority.[2] Hangula was a member of Namibia's Delimitation Commission, a body advising on the country's administrative division.[3] He holds a doctorate of philosophy and a master of arts (cum laude) from Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany.[4]
Dr. Hangula is a former technical advisor to the Joint Angola-Namibia Team of Experts on the Demarcation of the Maritime Boundary between Angola and Namibia, and a former member of Namibia’s country program for the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, Austria.[5] Hangula was conferred the Most Distinguished Order of Namibia: Second Class on Heroes' Day in 2014.[6] Dr. Hangula is the author and co-author of numerous scholarly articles.[7] Dr. Hangula is also actively engaged in academic exchange efforts with Japanese universities.[8]
