Colleen Atwood is an American prominent costume designer, who worked many Hollywood film productions and won Academy Awards for her work, including Best Costume Design for Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. Her contributions to Disney awarded her a Disney Legend award.Born in Ellensburg, Washington and grew up in the small farming community of Quincy. Dropping out of high school to support her baby and her husband, she took a job at a French fry factory. She later worked in Seattle while on a scholarship to Cornish College of the Arts.
Atwood began her career as a fashion advisor before becoming a production assistant for Ragtime. This led to a four-decade long career and collaborations with directors, such as Jonathan Demme (Married to the Mob, The Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia), Rob Marshall (Chicago, Memoirs of a Geisha, Nine), and Tim Burton (Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Mars Attacks!, Sleepy Hollow, Big Fish, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street). In television, she worked on Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Wednesday, and Masters of the Air.
Outside of film and television, Atwood ventured costume design for theater and shows, such as Sting's Bring On the Night World Tour, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus in 2005–2006, The Black Parade band uniforms for the band My Chemical Romance, as well as costumes for their album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys.
