The Chimpanzee Troop is a group of characters from the Jungle Cruise attraction at the Disney Parks.
History[]
Background[]
These chimpanzees are a group of primates that inhabit a part in the river that represents Africa. They are shown to cause mischief - often causing havoc on the Mekong Maiden which was lost all across the jungles where the chimps interacted with various supplies all across the river representing Africa.
Development history[]
The chimpanzee scene was recycled from the Gorilla Raiders scene by Marc Davis. This scene was created to replace the Headhunter Tribe scene, which contained outdated cultural depictions of tribesmen which were displayed in the attraction for many years until 2021 for the Disneyland and Magic Kingdom versions respectively. After being closed for a year, the Jungle Cruise attraction reopened on July 16, 2021 at the Disneyland version, fourteen days before the film adaptation of the Jungle Cruise attraction was released while the Magic Kingdom would later follow this refurbishment next. Despite this, the Headhunter Tribe scene still exists in the Tokyo Disneyland and the Hong Kong Disneyland versions respectively.
Appearances[]
Jungle Cruise[]
In the Disneyland version, the chimpanzee scene is encountered after the boats pass through a group of hostile hippos. The chimps are seen takingover the Mekong Maiden where they interact with various supplies causing havoc inside the ship. The other side of the chimpanzee scene depicts two chimpanzees interacting with supplies from the crates. Guests were able to avoid the chimpanzees in time where the boats suddenly end up in a section representing the Amazon River.
In the Magic Kingdom version, the chimpanzee scene is encountered after passing through hostile hippos where they are seen interacting with various supplies they took from explorers. Guests manage to evade the chimpanzees in time where the boat escapes from the chimpanzee area. The next scene after that is a scene representing the ruins of an ancient temple.
Jungle Cruise: Wildlife Expeditions[]
Located in the queue of the Tokyo Disneyland version is a picture of a chimpanzee on a sealed board that represents the "Friends of the Jungle" - albeit in a non-physical animatronic form[1].
Trivia[]
- The animatronics used for the chimpanzees in the Jungle Cruise attraction are identical to that of "Cheeta", a chimpanzee character that appeared in the 1930s-1960s eras of the Tarzan films as well as the TV series 1966-1968 whose animatronic appeared in the now-defunct Great Movie Ride attraction at Disney's Hollywood Studios. It is possible that animatronic chimpanzees were recycled versions of Cheeta.
