Happy New Year :)

New Year, new job, there are still some "parallel icons" that need a decent name including the "v"-prefix, e.g. File:BSicon exSTRel.svg (File:BSicon exSTRel.svg). Groetjes axpdeHello! 08:02, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Vunz!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Maps of railway lines in Germany

[edit]

Hi, I have just seen that you moved many maps from the proper subcats (mainly Category:Rail transport maps of North Rhine-Westphalia and Category:Rail transport maps of Lower Saxony ) to their overcat Category:Rail transport maps of Germany, which is already overcrowded. Why? I cannot really see a point in this, the maps are definitely easier to find in the subcat, which belongs to the respective federal state. And it's easier to avoid producing duplicates, as there often are (or migth be) further maps of the same railway lines in those state specific subcats. Regards, Kleeblatt187 (talk) 23:14, 25 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I did exactly that since over categorising doesn't help in finding these pictures, furthermore when they're all together in one category that exactly helps avoiding duplicates. Either way, some were and some weren't in subcategories which undesirable. Vunz (talk) 06:41, 26 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the Category:Rail transport maps of Germany with more than 400 files is more than confusing. And of course, as there are many files, it is a big work to clarify it by the subcats. This cannot be done in one day, it is a process step by step (that's why some files still are in the national category, while others already were in the proper federal states category). I am not talking about "atomizing" categories down to district or even municipality level, only down to the federal states, by the way the same as Category:Railway lines in Germany, which is also split into federal states. So railway lines and maps would be found on the same level. Furthermore the Category:Rail transport maps of Germany truly is confusing not only by the amount of files but also by all those different naming patterns, which the various users use. So finding duplicates (or even avoiding double work with creating duplicate maps) should be easier if one can find them on the state level. Thirdly, lots of your nice and helpful files cannot be found when searching down for example from Category:Maps of Lower Saxony, as long as they are only in the national level at the railway category tree. Being categorized at Category:Rail transport maps of Lower Saxony they could be found from both trees. And they are worth to be found! Regards, Kleeblatt187 (talk) 10:23, 26 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for appreciating my work. If you feel that all maps should be placed in their respective federal states feel free to do so. From now I will consider that when uploading new files. Vunz (talk) 11:16, 27 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I will do so... :-) Step by step. Greetings, Kleeblatt187 (talk) 19:43, 2 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Finished! :-) In some obvious cases I have also added your maps to articles in de-WP and en-WP as well as to wikidata. Cheers, Kleeblatt187 (talk) 21:18, 23 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

OpenStreetMap License

[edit]

Hi Vunz,

you wrote at File:DB_1901_railway_map.png that "All OpenStreetMap data and maps are Creative Commons "CC-BY-SA 2.0" licensed". That was true until September 2012 but nowadays OpenStreetMap data is available under Open Database License 1.0. The license of the map (the image) can be choosen by the map tile provider (It is CC-BY-SA 2.0 in case of openstreetmap.org). This means that it is correct to choose CC-BY-sA for File:DB_1901_railway_map.png but it is not correct to say: "All OpenStreetMap data and maps are Creative Commons "CC-BY-SA 2.0" licensed". I have corrected it at File:DB_1901_railway_map.png but I have not looked through all your previous and later uploads. --Nakaner (talk) 15:54, 21 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for mentioning, I've made a considerable amount of uploads. I'll check and where necessary amend the license. Vunz (talk) 20:30, 21 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Railway maps in Lübeck

[edit]

Hi Vunz,
why is it that you do not like the maps, showing railway maps in Lübeck, to be categorised under that category just including those?
I wonder? Ulf Heinsohn (talk) 17:26, 1 November 2016 (UTC)--[reply]

I'd like them to be categorised under Lower Saxony, for reasons that they're findable. Vunz (talk) 19:17, 2 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Vunz,
and does your argument also count for the findability of the maps within the Lübeck category? Why can't they be entered twice, once under Schleswig-Holstein, and once under Lübeck? Because now, they will not be findable as Lübeck maps?
Greetings by Ulf Heinsohn (talk) 18:57, 22 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The idea is that files should not be categorised in a parent and child directory. Meaning its either Lübeck or Schleswig-Holstein. If you like to readjust go ahead. Vunz (talk) 19:26, 24 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Important message for file movers

[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It seems that this map does not show the whole of the line. In particular, the place where it used to join Line 112 is not shown, or perhaps the loop of Line 112 where Line 267 branched off should be added so that Line 267 does not appear to be separate from the rest of the network. Would it be possible to amend the map accordingly? Thanks in advance. --Schlosser67 (talk) 09:23, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Actually it does show the whole line to where it joined L112. L112 used to follow a different route and was rerouted in 1983. By that time L267 was already razed. Vunz (talk) 13:46, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I see, then it might make sense to include the pre-1983 route of line 112. --Schlosser67 (talk) 15:35, 21 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I noticed that you uploaded and then immediately redirected File:BSicon vvÜSTu+r.svg. Please do not do this, as it creates a file without a description page. Would you like me to delete the file instead? --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 14:51, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

File:BSicon vvÜSTu+l.svg as well. --AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 15:23, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes please, both are obsolete. After uploading I realised they're exactly the same. Thanks, Vunz (talk) 18:48, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
