First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: :Image:Foo.jpg, which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: correct name
 • For more information read the full deletion guidelines

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

This message was added automatically by Filbot, if you need some help about it, ask its master (Filnik) or go to the Commons:Help desk. --Filnik 11:31, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi GTHO! Thanks for trying to get this file under a better name. Unfortunately your new upload did not preserve the original upload log nor the copyright license. I've made a request (using Rename) to have the image:Lotus79.jpg properly renamed. Until this request is processed we'll keep the file under the misleading name Lotus79, I trust you don't mind me replacing and deleting your duplicate upload. Malalla pics

[edit]

Thanks, it's good to see some of my images being put to good use. I have many others from the 2006 CAMS nationals at Malalla if you would like to use them. The ones I put up weren't the best as I am wary of people who own and drive these vehicles not wanting them posted due to copyright, so I chose the pics that didn't identify them too well. I could probably fill the grid with good images of each vehicle of each race category if the drivers are happy to see the vehicles on Wiki. Fairv8 (talk) 08:55, 31 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, GTHO!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Brabham BT42 > Brabham BT44

[edit]

I see that you have requested many moves that shift pictures of Manfredo di Rossi's Brabham BT42 to BT44 filenames, without actually contacting any of the authors (which includes me). Why? This car is a BT42. That it is currently wearing some aspects of a BT44's bodywork is neither here nor there, the car is a BT42. What's you logic behind the misleading file names and category inclusions? Pyrope (talk) 22:42, 29 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that an image of a BT42 with BT44 bodywork should be named and classified as a BT42 and would not have made the changes if I had understood that this applied to the images in question. The changes were made in good faith on the asumption that it was BT44 and I apologise for not doing my homework first. May I suggest that reference to the BT44 bodywork be added to the descriptions of these images to prevent the same thing happening for the same reason in the future. With a rename like was requested for File:Ford Popular at Brede Waterworks (1).jpg, there should be an evidence-base presented to demonstrate that the rename is more than opinion. Alternatively, discuss this with the uploader and reach a consensus.  — billinghurst sDrewth 05:17, 20 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi GTHO, I like this photo very much and I think it should be displayed more. Might it happen that you see this car again? If you do would you please make a mental note of the build year and engine cubic capacity and add that info to the picture. Thanks for taking and uploading the picture! Thanks! The relevant programme indicates that it's a 1939 model, so I have added that to the description along with some when and where details.

Categories — Ford Fairlane

[edit]

Hi, thanks for helping add exact categories to the Ford Fairlane images. Just thought I might let you know about two features that can make it much easier for you to place images into categories, saving you a lot of time. These are the gadgets called Cat-a-lot and HotCat.

To enable, go to Special:Preferences, then go to the tab "Gadgets". Scroll down to "Tools for categories" and select the first two boxes. Make sure you click "save" at the bottom of the page once done.

 • Cat-a-lot will show up as a yellow box at the bottom right hand corner of categories and it helps with moving multiple files to subcategories. For example, easily move in all first generation images to the first generation category in one go.
 • HotCat changes the way category links are displayed at the bottom of image pages so it becomes very easy to add, delete and change categories without having to click "edit" at the top of the page first.

Both features also have autocomplete, so if you type in "Ford Fairl" it will suggest "Ford Fairlane" for you.

Cheers! OSX (talkcontributions) 04:58, 21 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I'll give it a go. GTHO (talk) 07:38, 21 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
HotCat works well but the Cat-a-lot gadget does not appear for me, even after clearing my cache. GTHO (talk) 22:06, 21 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
So for Cat-a-lot you definitely don't have the small yellow box like this? Once clicked it should expand to this. OSX (talkcontributions) 08:51, 22 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the examples however there is no Cat-a-lot yellow box showing for me! GTHO (talk) 09:22, 22 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Mmmm... sounds strange. I suggest the following:
 • Log in using a different computer if you have one;
 • Update your existing web browser to the latest version;
 • Use a different web browser, e.g. Google Chrome, Firefox, or Opera;
 • Double check your preferences to make sure Cat-a-lot is activated, maybe it didn't forward through to the server;
 • Download the latest version of Java. This may be required to run the JavaScript, but I'm not 100 percent sure how it works.
If none of the above helps, I can only recommend that you file a report with Commons:Help desk an have someone with more experience assist you. Cheers, OSX (talkcontributions) 09:40, 22 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
All good now. Thanks again for the advice. GTHO (talk) 09:27, 26 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I've been trying to correct the category names for each year of Ford Fairlane for years. I originally created some of them in this manner to cover specific year ranges, and other people created the incorrectly formatted year categories you see today. I'm glad you fixed two of them. ----DanTD (talk) 14:28, 3 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello GTHO (Grand Tourismo High Output), the green car is a standard Chrysler (or Talbot) Sunbeam, it is NOT a Sunbeam Lotus. I therefore reverted your changes of the categories of this car. Thank you for your understanding. OnkelFordTaunus (talk) 23:11, 3 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Cars & Trucks board the Orient Point-New London Ferries

[edit]

So, is there any chance you can identify the SUV along side the Jeep Grand Cherokee and in front of the Chevy Trail Blazer, so I don't have to use such a generic category for it? I know I was the one who took the picture, and I'm usually good at this kind of thing myself, but with so many of them looking generic not to mention the various rebadges, I actually forgot what this one was. ----DanTD (talk) 03:10, 25 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry TanTD, I don't recognize the SUV in question. I have however taken the liberty of changing the Honda to a Honda Civic (2005) and the Range Rover to a Land Rover. GTHO (talk) 04:27, 28 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Speedied a category you created

Alvis 4.3 rename

[edit]

Hello, thank you for pointing out the error in the file name and the description. It slipped through because it looked similar to the other pictures. You filed a request for renaming. However I think there is a better solution. First of all we need to identify the model to give it a proper name, not just a generic Mercedes-Benz. As soon as we have the kind of model I can use my rights as file mover to do so. So I kindly request to withdraw the request until we have a perfect solution. Several file movements create problems down the line.--Giftzwerg 88 (talk) 10:41, 12 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category

[edit]

English · español · français

When you want to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category, best practice is to mark it with either:

C2 ("unuseful empty category") if it would be OK to re-create it in the future, given that appropriate content becomes available
C1 ("improperly named category") if it is an inappropriate category name that should not be reused (e.g. typos).

"C1" and "C2" come from Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion. You could also use of the following:

current category name
empty, misspelled category name

The above templates (SD, speedy, Badname) expand to full speedy deletion requests.

In particular, this is better practice than just blanking the category page, as you did at Category:1971 Mercury Cyclone. Blanked categories end up on Commons:Report Special:UncategorizedCategories.

Thank you. (This is a standardized talk page message)
