Catégorisation
[edit]Bonjour.
-- BarnCas (talk) 17:59, 20 August 2018 (UTC)

Series v series
[edit]Hi BarnCas! I usually am quite relaxed when I see your name pop up in my watchlist, but... Renaming Category:Mercedes-Benz L-series (Brazil - 1982-1990) is entirely in error. "Series" is not part of the name and thus should not be capitalized. It could possibly be discussed (although I am firmly opposed), but renaming a category for a dubious capitalization change is definitely not following guidelines. BTW, is there a discussion somewhere on this pernicious habit of capitalizing all and sundry? Would love to hash it out properly. Best, mr.choppers (talk)-en- 02:27, 4 December 2018 (UTC)
- Hi, mr.choppers!
It's maybe due to the fact that English is not my mother tongue, but I thought that when using an hyphen, at least in a title, the second term had to start with a capital when being a noun or an adjective? I saw it several times in Commons (Ford F-Series, Mercedes-Benz G-Class, Kia K-Series, GM G-Series...) and in other sites, even on advertisement (Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Ford F-Series...).
This said, while this site saysA good rule of thumb for capitalizing hyphenated words in titles is that you capitalize the second unit if
• it's a noun - Second-Century Thinkers
• it's an adjective - The World of Semi-Professional Athletes
• you want to stress an equal balance between the two units - A History of Athen's City-States
this one explains that there's no fixed rule, depending mostly on which style manual you prefer.
As we're here talking about category titles, and as I feel comfortable with the "capital habit" that I try to follow since the beginning, you may now understand why I renamed the category that way. The non capitalized titles I created were written too fast, hence the replacement.
And to answer to your question, I never saw anything written about this "problem" somewhere in Commons or in the English WP. You should maybe ask about it in Commons' Village pump or in WP's equivalent? If you do, please ping me here, so I'll know how to write the next "Something-Series".

- Ah, I understand your reasoning. I think it's an Americanism, perhaps, here they capitalize everything they can. Also, since "F-Series" is the name used by Ford, it is the vehicle's name. "L-series" for the Mercedes trucks is a catchall title invented by us to try to describe this range, but it's not the name. This is also made more complicated by the fact that in German, all nouns are capitalized. As for the sites you mention, most of them seem to be concerned with capitalization in a title, as in American English the rule is to capitalize most words in a title. This is not universal, though, and I don't know if a category name would fall udner this. Best, mr.choppers (talk)-en- 15:09, 16 December 2018 (UTC)

- @Max schwalbe: Why did you put this notification here? As far as I remember, I didn't create this category nor ever used it?
