Hello, Valjean!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

I have left you a comment at User talk:The Emirr. Due to the nature of the allegations you have made, I would like to see some clarifications presented ASAP. --Hydrox (talk) 20:01, 21 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

I too would like to see some clarification from The Emirr. I ask questions and get no answers. I have replied there. Please encourage The Emirr to answer my questions. -- BullRangifer (talk) 14:40, 22 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
He has no obligation to answer your allegations (although I too hope he would). My hunch is that you are mistaken, the images appear correctly licensed and not violating the IUCN copyright. Note that if you re-trace the animal's range on your own map using the IUCN map as a source, it is not a Derivative work, and the user is not bound by the IUCN license. They can upload the images to Wikipedia/Commons under their own name, only providing the IUCN as a reference (specifically, they are not bound by the IUCN Terms of Use, that you cited.) --hydrox (talk) 17:28, 22 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
I just did some more investigation and I discovered an error I made. I thought the copyright notice was originally from IUCN, but it's not. It uses the name of Cypron, a company which makes computer games, but is probably unrelated to them. I'm guessing it's his own copyright notice, so he's apparently on safe ground. Therefore I'm going to drop this whole thing and apologize to him for my error. Otherwise, I still stand by my position (and the position of others), that the original map we've been using at the reindeer article is better than this one. -- BullRangifer (talk) 02:51, 23 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

I wasn't running away from your questions. I can log in rarely. I saw all your messages tonight. And i answered suddenly. But i think now there is no need. Anyway, i understand that you are trying to protect Wiki. And i thank you in the name of all users and me. Have a good day.

Thank you for being so gracious. I am truly sorry for all this. It just goes to show that one misunderstanding can set one off on the wrong track. I got confused and things went from there. I wish you well in the future. Happy editing! -- BullRangifer (talk) 04:23, 26 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Caribou subspecies map

edit

Hi BullRangifer - thanks for the note! As an aside, I discovered a problem with the Commons map, which is inaccurate, giving Alaskan Caribou as Rangifer tarandus granti, a subspecies is not accepted by MSW. I don't have a SVG-editing program, so can't update it. My inclination would be to continue the line between 1 and 4 westward, thus treating the forested majority of Alaska as R. t. caribou, but with the tundra area in northern Alaska as R. t. groenlandicus. What do you think? - MPF (talk) 12:03, 12 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

In spite of having written this article, I'm not an expert on taxonomy, so you may want to follow this, as well as contact User:Cephas, who created that map. What makes it even more confusing is that they all interbreed, so local populations can be mixtures, and then some have been imported, and have then interbred with local species. That has happened in Greenland, where I have lived and hunted them. Very flavorful meat! There I encountered some with furry snouts, and others with wet and flat snouts, exactly like a cow's. They are very curious, and I have shot several at less than 20 m. My very first day of hunting I shot three, and the third one was with another one. They wanted to see what I was doing while I was gutting one I had just shot. They approached and stopped about 6 m. away and just watched what I was doing. -- BullRangifer (talk) 19:44, 12 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! I'll ask Cephas; my preference is to follow MSW, as that has semi-official status as the preferred taxonomy for mammals on Commons. The difficulty is deciding on the boundaries, as NSW doesn't define them. Never had a chance to try Reindeer as a food - the only ones I've seen are the domesticated herd in the Cairngorms in Scotland (which were imported from Lapland about 70 years ago). - MPF (talk) 22:09, 12 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
They can be very tame, and the Laps are experts at that. -- BullRangifer (talk) 02:40, 13 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Scale image

edit

Do you still need that scale? Afraid November was a point of minimal activity on Wikipedia. Adam Cuerden (talk) 18:14, 3 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Not anymore. An acceptable version was created and is in use in the "Censorship and whitewashing" section of my essay. I haven't yet released it into project space and would appreciate comments and suggestions on the talk page. I want to "get it right" before releasing it. -- BullRangifer (talk) 20:10, 3 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading File:Matt DeHart, New Hampshire mugshot 2021.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

This is a strange situation, as BuzzFeed violated Steele's copyright by publishing, without permission, the whole dossier, and Steele has never asserted copyright after all these years. It's become public domain now. Isn't a screenshot of one page allowed under fair use? -- Valjean (talk) 00:07, 6 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
The creator not asserting copyright is not a valid reason for a file to be in the public domain, because Commons cares about copyright even when a copyright owner does not. I agree that this file is usable under enwiki's fair use rules. However, it should be uploaded locally to enwiki in that case, not here. Snowmanonahoe (talk) 00:25, 6 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

 • This file is a copyright violation for the following reason: It's just a tweet. Can't find any indication that this person licenses their tweets, and it's obviously not own work
