Image information
editYou claim that the image Image:Sadc logo.gif is public domain. What is your source for this? Also, Image:Marriage usa.png have no source or license. Images without this crucial information may have to be deleted. Thuresson 21:38, 5 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- In the latter case, that might be the best course of action; I created it by adapting an already existing image used in the respective article, but then happened to find it that I had conflicting information on the actual status of same-sex unions in the different states. Regarding the SADC logo, I think I recall reading that for uses representing the organisation in media and information networks, the logo is available for free use; could be my mistake, though. Nightstallion 13:52, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- You're right about logos of companies or organisations, there are usually no problems using logos for journalistic purposes. However, WikiCommons is a image databank, not a journalistic product. Also, WikiCommons rules do not allow images that do not have a free license, see Commons:Licensing. Thuresson 7 July 2005 17:34 (UTC)

Don't you think Image:Flag of Sao Tome and Principe.svg should be at Image:Flag of São Tomé and Príncipe.svg, to agree with w:Flag of São Tomé and Príncipe? It's not like diacritics cause cancer or something ... User:dbenbenn 00:34, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
- Mh. Well, I standardized names to be without diacritics, mainly because Côte d'Ivoire's flag was uploaded without diacritics and I used it as a precedent case... I wouldn't be opposed to it, of course, but I'm not sure whether it's worth the effort. Mh. ナイトスタリオン ✉ 06:31, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
Request
editI've got one more flag request, but since it's personal and not for general use, I thought I'd rather post it here than on the WikiProject Flags page. Could you be so nice as to create an SVG flag that consists of half the European flag, and half the Austrian one? It's probably not very hard to code it, but I've got no knowledge of SVG at all... I think it'd look best if it were split diagonally, with the European flag half in the upper left and the Austrian flag half in the lower right. Could you do that? Would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! ナイトスタリオン ✉ 20:38, 1 December 2005 (UTC)
- Image:European-Austrian flag hybrid.svg. Open that file in a text editor, and compare it to the two separate flags. Also, if you want to learn SVG, check out [1] for some good documentation.

This flag should probably be re-uploaded as Image:Flag of the French Southern Territories.svg, since en:French Southern Territories is where enwiki's article is... And it should be added to your table, ne? —Nightstallion (?) 07:24, 25 January 2006 (UTC)
- I'd have to look into the name some. The actual official French name (as the en page says) is translated much closer to "French Southern and Antarctic Lands" than it is to "French Southern Territories". I know the precident is to have it match the en article's name, but I'm not sure it really matters when it's already this close (and is actually more accurate). You might take it up with the WikiProject if you want more input.
- Presently my table only has places from en:list of countries listed, but perhaps it is time to start expanding it. Maybe it's time to ask the WikiProject if taking it out of my namespace and promoting more participation would be a good idea, too. Hrmmm. ¦ Reisio 08:46, 25 January 2006 (UTC)

Federal subjects of Russia
editI have a question about the maps of Russia that you did.
- Tiumen Oblast (number 42 in Image:Oblasts of Russia.png) contains Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District and Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District. In your map it seems quite small, when in fact, is one of the bigest Oblast of Russia.
- Chita Oblast (number 7) seems to have a "hole", but Aga Buryatia is part of the Oblast.
- etc
The same happens in Image:Krais of Russia.png
Do you have any idea to show in those maps that Autonomous Districs are always inside Oblasts or Krais? Pmmollet talk 09:49, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
- I originally erroneously created the maps like this, but later decided together with User:Ezhiki, one of the experts on Russian federal subjects on :en, that it wouldn't hurt only to show the core areas in these maps. Besides, in a few years Putin will have merged most of the autonomous regions into larger krais, anyway. ;) —Nightstallion (?) 14:20, 3 February 2006 (UTC)

Image Tagging Image:Flag of Navarre.svg
edit
Thanks for uploading Image:Flag of Navarre.svg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use GFDL-self to release it under the GFDL or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Armenia
editJust because the decision hasn't been formalised yet it doesn't make it neutral. Maybe light orange but neutral is not a name for a country which calls Kosovo recognition illegal and say it will not recognise it. Don't you think so? --Avala 17:25, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
- Your source is from 17 February -- this source from yesterday clearly shows Armenia is neutral for now. Okay? —Nightstallion (?) 17:29, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
- No my source says "Armenia not going to recognize Kosovo independence 25.02.2008 14:35 GMT+04:00". I am puzzled now because two sources publish two different stories on the same day. I would like this to be resolved in civilized matter and without threats from some users though. Obviously there is some confusion going on in Armenia and we need to figure what is going on rather then to fight. I am not sure why the other user took this issue so personally as I have just followed news sources I found. --Avala 17:40, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
- Oh, strange. I was just quoting the source in the English Wikipedia article -- that one's from 17 February. I'd say unless we've got clear evidence that it's officially against recognition, we should consider them neutral for now, shouldn't we? —Nightstallion (?) 18:10, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah I see that in reference it says 17/2 but it's an edit error. When you open the news article it gives 25/02. I don't know maybe putting it back to gray then since Armenia obviously doesn't have a clear diplomacy since they are able to make completely different statements to two different media companies, one from Azerbaijan one from Armenia. Maybe that is the case. They are telling Azerbaijan they are neutral so they could continue with recognizing Karabakh but they also tell Russians and domestic readers they are not recognizing.
One more thing. I've noticed your revert wars on maps. I have seen that on Wikipedia there is an agreement to show maps in regard to countries position. So if it shows France on Europe map it shows Serbia and Kosovo as two countries but if it shows Spain it shows Serbia and Kosovo as one country. So if the map is on Kosovo it shows Kosovo as independent but if it is a map of Serbia it shows Serbia with Kosovo. We have to be careful about the thing called partial recognition and that obviously there are so many conflicted views on this and that we can't take one side - neither is Kosovo part of Serbia neither it's independent. --Avala 17:45, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
- I've tried to discuss the issue with Cp6, but he won't listen -- the issue is quite obviously analogous to the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic issue, which Morocco claims as part of its territory. The SADR is only recognised by about 40 states (that's about the minimum approval Kosovo will get, as well), but it's shown on ALL OF OUR MAPS as a distinct entity -- so Kosovo should logically be given the same treatment, no? —Nightstallion (?) 18:10, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
- I think neither solution is good. I am all for midsolution, compromise and that is for an example showing map of Kosovo with striped or shaded Serbia and Serbia with striped or shaded Kosovo. That would show that there is some dispute behind it and that the issue of borders is not solved. Making any other kind of map which includes only one side is not good because it will always be reverted as the other side will think it's unfair. --Avala 18:36, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
- I would agree with that -- except for the fact that there's a clear precedent in the Western Sahara/SADR case... If we go with your solution, we'd also have to shade the Western Sahara *AND* Taiwan *AND* all the other territorial disputes over minor border issues, of which there are a couple dozen. I think it's the better way to use the SADR precedent in this case -- especially as Cp6 has so far been the only one who's against the update to the maps... —Nightstallion (?) 19:36, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
- Actually Western Sahara is exactly using what I suggest.

Yes and no -- I absolutely agree that articles which specifically treat Serbia and/or Kosovo should do it like this, but the general world maps we've got ALL show Western Sahara (and Palestine) as a separate entity due to the partial recognition of the disputed status. So I think it's okay if we do it as we've just both stated:
- Maps which are specifically about Serbia or Kosovo should use the striped/shaded pattern.
- Maps unrelated to the issue should show the de facto situation -- and as Kosovo is partially recognised like SADR and Palestine, that means with the borders.
Do you agree with that? —Nightstallion (?) 20:29, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
- Pretty much. Though EU map will again have to have some sort of signal as EU has no common position. This is a very specific case it seems as the whole world is divided on issue. I wish those politicians could have just solved it with some kind of compromise to make our lives easier :) For an example how does EU think to start Kosovo accession if it doesn't recognize it? --Avala 20:41, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
- If you want my interpretation of the issue: The Cyprus issue will -- hopefully -- be resolved rather quickly in the next two years; after that, Cyprus and Greece will have no problems recognising the realities on the ground. Slovakia and Romania don't really have a strong reason to be against the independence, as the Hungarian minorities in both countries have repeatedly promised not to make a fuss about the Kosovo precendent; the only real question is Spain, and I suspect that Zapatero might be more conciliant regarding Kosovan independence AFTER the election in early March. But we'll see. —Nightstallion (?) 20:49, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
- Considering Basques have announced test referendum for late 2008 and real one for 2010, and Hungarians in Romania have asked for the same thing as Kosovo a few days ago and Cypriot Greeks have rejected unification plan not so long ago so I think the new president is too optimistic that Turkish army will pull out and that Greeks will agree on reunification this thing will probably drag for some time and the only thing I can imagine solving it (in some time though) is if EU invites both Serbia and Kosovo to make a confederation and join the union. --Avala 21:02, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
- I don't think that would be a solution, as Kosovans would only accept a confederation if an independence referendum was possible after some time -- so no chance there, I suppose. I'd like to see the sources for your claims about Romania and the 2010 Basque referendum -- all I know about that is that Ibarretxe announced some non-descript referendum about the future of the País Vasco about a year ago, but still hasn't said what it'll actually be about -- some even claim that it will be his masterstroke to kill ETA, since if a majority is against independence, then ETA will have to accept the public's opinion. And the Greek Cypriots mainly rejected reunification because Papadopoulos refused to finish negotiations begun by his predecessor Klerides -- I'm pretty certain Talat and Christofias should have a solution ready by the end of 2009. But we'll see.
- So, your sources for the Romanian Hungarians' claim to independence and for the 2010 referendum? ;) —Nightstallion (?) 22:15, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
- No no no, It was the Basques who are doing that - [12]: "A referendum in the Basque Country regarding Basque self determination is scheduled for 25 October 2008. Ibarretxe stated he would negotiate its terms with the Spanish central government until June 2008, and would submit a possible mutually accepted plan to a binding referendum; should the negotiations fail, Ibarretxe stated he would hold a non-binding referendum on the future of the Basque Country.[2] Another referendum in 2010 would then decide the final status of the Basque Country."--Avala 23:12, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, I meant "sources for independence claim of Hungarians in Romania" and "sources for the 2010 referendum of the Basques".
- Ouch, I had totally forgotten that. (It was me who added that to the article. ;)) Still, as I've said, some people claim this is a secret plan to kill ETA's political right to exist, forever. What about the Hungarians? Haven't found anything on that... —Nightstallion (?) 23:52, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
- Could be. Unless they vote 'yes'. Regarding Hungarians in Romania - http://www.novinite.com/view_news.php?id=90497 - "Leaders of the Democratic Union of the Hungarians in Romania (DUHR) stated their intention to use the Kosovo precedent in order to ask for territorial autonomy for the regions of Mures, Harghita, and Kovasna, where most of the Hungarian minority lives, the Romanian press reported Monday" 18 February 2008 --Avala 01:26, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
- They'll never vote yes, trust me. I'm very sympathetic to independence movements in general, but there simply isn't a majority in the Basque Country, much less so in Navarre and the French Basque Country. Thanks for the link! Still, that's only a claim to autonomy (which they should get, if you ask me). —Nightstallion (?) 08:56, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah I wouldn't mind independence in the most developed countries because it changes nothing (well passport and capital) but I am not really for independence of places like Transnistria ie. independence should come at the moment that nobody cares and not otherwise it causes instability and no real independence (if you have 50+% unemployment it means your new country must rely on donations = it's not independent, it's just changing hands). If independence needs to be followed by three different overseeing international bodies then again it's a sign of a too early secession. If I remember correctly Serbia offered Kosovo it's own membership everywhere they wanted except for the UN. Now Kosovo doesn't get the UN and it doesn't get membership in those other European organizations either. --Avala 12:42, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
- True enough, at least for now. But we'll see how the situation develops. Serbia's attachment to Kosovo is irrational and purely emotional -- economically and politically, they'd be far better off without the complicated, expensive and unruly southern province. Maybe they'll see that in a decade or two, but we can only wait and hope the situation will be resolved somehow... —Nightstallion (?) 12:47, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Kosovo on maps
editI've written out a small proposal on how to treat Kosovo on maps here: Image talk:Continental-Europe-map.png#Kosovo - a solution. I'd like your feedback. Thanks! Hoshie (talk) 11:13, 27 September 2008 (UTC)
There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Tip: Categorizing images
edit
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 21:35, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

Libyan Revolt Flag
editCan you possibly change it to the more accurate depiction of a tricolor with bands of width, as that is the most common variant being flown, also on a side note, a majority of the makeshift flags have star and crescents, though mostly crudely drawn and sometimes just the outlines making them difficult to see in photos
Bandeira do Leal Senado
editHi!! Could you create an svg of the Flag of Leal Senado (pt:Bandeira do Leal Senado (Macau)) based on this Flags of the World - Bandeiras do Concelho de Macau?? This flag is very relevant, because it represents the old Macau, the Macau governed by the portuguese... this flag is so representative that in the handover ceremony of Macau, this flag was used to represent the portuguese Macau, instead of the Flag of the Government of Portuguese Macau. Can you help me or can you transmit this message to someone that can create this file? AdriAg (talk) 16:39, 14 March 2011 (UTC)

Copyright status: File:Flag of San Marino.svg
editThis media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Flag of San Marino.svg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

File:Flag of the Dominican Republic.svg
editSir,
My name is Alexis Ovalle. The picture you uploaded with name "Flag of the Dominican Republic.svg" has an error. In the coat of arms the red ribbon in the bottom reading "Republica Dominicana" should have its ends pointing upwards. This is in accordance to article 32 of the Dominican Republic's constitution. Since your picture is widely used in wekipedia, an update to the picture would be suitable. I have uploaded a picture of the correct coat of arms into Commons which you are welcome to use as a reference or copy. File:Flag of Portugal.svg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request.

Copyright status: File:Flag of Lesotho.svg
editCopyright status: File:Flag of Lesotho.svg

Thanks for uploading File:Flag of Lesotho.svg.
Thank you. |
