Cheese images

edit

Hi, I noticed you uploaded a number of cheese images from PDphoto.org. Thanks. However, next time you upload some images, please remember to give them more descriptive names (his default file names don't tell us much), put in a better description (instead of just "Cheese", you could at least specify the type of cheese), and give a direct URL to the page containing the image (rather than just "PDphoto.org"). Thanks so much. howcheng {chat} 23:16, 9 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi Broc, i'm writing you regarding your intervention on this page. This evening the user in question came on our IRC channel and asked for explanations about your behaviour, as he previously found out that you're italian. In fact, he didn't question your choice, but the absolute lack of reasons you left. You can easily imagine his astonishment when, after being sure he's never had any kind of contact with you, he saw a vote against him (even in spanish) with no reasons. If you could please clarify this, both we and the user above would be very glad :) --Emc2 21:29, 28 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Bye

About the vote expressed in spanish, I just wrote contro [italian for "against" NbEmc2] as I thought it was in italian... The reason for my vote against him is that he made so few edits within the last months that I don't think he's suitable for the sysop role. that's all... besides, am I really forced to give explanations for my opinion??? Bye, --Broc 11:28, 29 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Negative, you are not required to give explanations, but I want to live up to your expectations and I only asked to know what was your reasoning so I could improve myself. Thanks for your reply. --Cool CatTalk|@ 21:04, 29 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ciao Broc,

 • l'uso commerciale

Hi Broc! You have uploaded the following pictures from http://pdphoto.org/ :

They are not PD as you claim. They are provided under CC-by-NC-SA which is incompatible with Commons, therefore I must delete them. As said on the main page, PDphoto.org is not really a repository of true public domain photos, despite the name. It contains pictures whose license is incompatible with Commons.

Please keep in mind that you must provide:

 • a (helpful) description
 • a valid and exact source URL (PD-photo.org is not sufficient)
 • an author (Jon Sullivan I guess - PD-photo.org is just a repository)
 • a license that matches the actual picture license (check it)

Could you please check your previous uploads of PDphoto.org pictures and 1. ask the deletion of those that don't conform to Commons policy; 2. complete the description of those that do?

Thanks. — Xavier, 13:39, 24 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ok, thank you for the warning. I uploaded some images of PDphoto.org alot of time ago. Are they in PD or not? --Broc 14:08, 11 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
I did not check all the pictures you uploaded here. I only checked all the PDphoto pictures of penguins and all (but one) were not PD and, therefore, were speedy-deleted. As said above, it'd be kind of you to check if the other PDphoto pictures you uploaded are PD or not. thanks. — Xavier, 15:10, 12 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Broc!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:03pd1898-s.jpg, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file (:File:03pd1898-s.jpg).

If you created the content yourself, enter Own as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, GFDL or Cc-zero to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Nuovo metodo...

edit

Ciao Broc!

Fammi sapere! --Alex_brollo Talk|Contrib 12:48, 26 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi Broc !

You now have the Patroller right and may call yourself a patroller ! Please take a moment to read the updated Commons:Patrol to learn how Patrolling works and how we use it to fight vandalism.

As you know already, the patrolling functionality is enabled for all edits, not just for new-page creations. This enables us to keep track of, for example, edits made by anonymous users here on Commons.

We could use you help at the Counter Vandalism Unit. For example by patrolling an Anonymous-edits checklist and checking a day-part. There is a short video tutorial which addresses some things you may not know about.

If you have any questions please leave a message on the CVU talkpage or ask for help on IRC in #wikimedia-commons. — Tanvir | Talk ] 14:36, 6 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:
 • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
 • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
 • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
 • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
 • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

Thank you.

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open!

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

The 2013 Picture of the Year. View all results »

Dear Broc,

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

 • In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
 • In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

 1. 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
 2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
 3. In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

Important message for file movers

edit

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

 • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
 • To perform file name swaps.
 • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
