Ormund Hightower was the Lord of the Hightower and the head of House Hightower during the Dance of the Dragons. He wielded the Valyrian steel blade Vigilance.[4] Ormund was the nephew of Ser Otto Hightower,[4] Hand of the King to Jaehaerys I, Viserys I and Aegon II Targaryen.
In the television adaptation House of the Dragon, Ormund is portrayed by James Norton.[5]
History
Lord Ormund had three sons, Lyonel, Martyn, and Garmund, and at least one daughter, Bethany with his first wife. After she died in childbed, he married again to Samantha Tarly, who was only two years older than his eldest son.[3]
Ormund led the Reach forces for the greens during the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, supporting his kinsman, King Aegon II Targaryen. His host included a thousand knights, a thousand archers, three thousand men-at-arms, and thousands more of less discipline.[4] Not all of the Reach's lords supported him, however. Ser Alan Beesbury and Lord Alan Tarly raided Ormund's camps and killed his scouts, while Lord Owen Costayne attacked his baggage train. Ormund wanted to wait for reinforcements from King's Landing.[4]
During the Battle of the Honeywine, Ormund and his forces were trapped on the banks of the river between the forces of Lord Thaddeus Rowan and Tom Flowers on one side and Owen and the two Alans on the other. Lord Hightower's lines were starting to crumble and defeat seemed all but a foregone conclusion. Prince Daeron Targaryen, Ormund's squire and Aegon's brother, turned up on his dragon, Tessarion, however, and turned the battle for the greens. After the battle Ormund knighted Daeron with Vigilance, naming the prince "Ser Daeron the Daring".[4]
After the fall of King's Landing, Ser Criston Cole marched south from Harrenhal with the intention of joining Ormund's host, but Criston was slain en route at the Butcher's Ball.[2] After the siege of Longtable, Ormund spared Lady Merryweather. Ormund and Daeron led the sack of Bitterbridge, however, as Daeron's nephew, Prince Maelor Targaryen, had been killed in that town.[2]
During the First Battle of Tumbleton, Lord Ormund's archers and heavy horse defeated the six thousand blacks of Ser Garibald Grey. After the surviving rivermen retreated into Tumbleton, Roderick Dustin, Lord of Barrowton, led his Winter Wolves rode out to meet the greens. Screaming war cries, the northmen fought through ten times their own numbers till Roderick came face to face with Lord Hightower. Ormund's cousin, Ser Bryndon Hightower, put himself between the northman and his liege, taking off his arm with his longaxe, yet Roddy the Ruin slew both before succumbing to his wounds.[2]
After losing their general at First Tumbleton, Lord Ormund's host was divided and without direction, with the Caltrops and the Two Betrayers competing for leadership. Ser Hobert Hightower, Ormund's cousin, ineffectually claimed command.[2] The army finally dissolved following the Second Battle of Tumbleton.[6]
The fifteen-year-old Lyonel succeeded his father as Lord of the Hightower and took as his paramour Lady Sam, Ormund's second wife.[3]
