Benerro is a tall and thin man with a drawn face and skin white as milk.[2] Red flame tattoos cover his cheeks, chin, shaven head, and his high voice carries well.[2]
The High Priest preaches from a red stone pillar which connects to a lofty terrace of the Temple of the Lord of Light by slender stone bridge.[2] Benerro is able to have flames leap from his fingers and shape the fire into Valyrian glyphs.[2] He also claims to be able to see the future in his flames.[2]
Moqorro considers Benerro to be a righteous slave,[3] but the ruling triarchs of Volantis live in great fear of him.[2]
History
Benerro was bought by the red temple while enslaved as a child.[2]

A Dance with Dragons
At the Temple of the Lord of Light, Benerro preaches that Daenerys Targaryen is Azor Ahai reborn, and he encourages many to support her. This unnerves the triarchs as four out of every five inhabitants of Volantis are slaves and they fear an uprising. Thousands come to see Benerro preach every night, but the triarchs are powerless to stop him, as too many of the tiger cloaks worship the Lord of Light. Triarch Malaquo attempts to hire the Golden Company to kill Benerro and purge the temple of his followers, but the sellswords refuse.[2]
Not long after their arrival in Volantis, Tyrion Lannister and Ser Jorah Mormont make their way to the Long Bridge and pass the red temple as Benerro is preaching. When Benerro's voice rises to a crescendo, Tyrion recognizes Doom and Darkness among the Valyrian glyphs of flame which leap from his fingers. Benerro preaches that Daenerys is in danger, and he riles up the crowd.[2]
Benerro secretly sends his right hand, Moqorro, to Daenerys aboard the ship Selaesori Qhoran as an emissary from their temple. Even though the ship's destination is Qarth, Benerro sees in the flames that the Selaesori Qhoran will never reach that city.[2] The trading cog is eventually ruined by a storm in the Gulf of Grief,[4] and Moqorro is rescued from the sea by Grief, the longship of the Vole within the Iron Fleet.[5]
Quotes
Qavo: Benerro's rantings will only serve to bring a savage wrath down upon his head.
Tyrion: What rantings?
Qavo: In Volantis, thousands of slaves and freedmen crowd the temple plaza every night to hear Benerro shriek of bleeding stars and a sword of fire that will cleanse the world. He has been preaching that Volantis will surely burn if the triarchs take up arms against the silver queen.[6]
Flames had been tattooed across his cheeks and chin and shaven head to make a bright red mask that crackled about his eyes and coiled down and around his lipless mouth.[2]
—thoughts of Tyrion Lannister
Benerro can see the morrow in his flames. Triarch Malaquo tried to hire the Golden Company, did you know? He meant to clean out the red temple and put Benerro to the sword. He dare not use tiger cloaks. Half of them worship the Lord of Light as well. Oh, these are dire days in Old Volantis, even for wrinkled old widows.[2]
