The Master Sword Lv2 (originally named Tempered Sword) is a recurring Item in The Legend of Zelda series.[1][note 1] It is an upgrade to the Master Sword preceding the Master Sword Lv3 and is the second strongest Sword in both A Link to the Past and A Link Between Worlds. The Master Sword Lv.2 goes unnamed in Ancient Stone Tablets.

Location and Uses[]

A Link to the Past[]

In A Link to the Past, this weapon was called the Tempered Sword. Link can obtain this version of the Master Sword by taking the Dwarven Swordsmith trapped in the Dark World back to his brother in the Light World to the Smithery east of Kakariko Town. As a token of gratitude, the brothers will upgrade the young hero's sacred blade. However, the forging process takes time and Link is forced to leave his sword with them and wait (this can be quickly done by moving one screen and then return back). During this time, Link can perform the action of swinging a blade without one in his possession, resembling a punch, but he cannot deal damage to enemies this way. Link must use items if he wishes to defeat enemies before retrieving the Tempered Sword.

Tempering the Master Sword makes the Blade of Evil's Bane much stronger, gives the blade a reddish-orange glow, and causes it to make a deeper swing sound as opposed to the usual slash sound. It is twice as strong as its normal state (making the Tempered Sword four times as strong as the Fighter's Sword), but the Sword Beam still retains its original power and continues to do so even as the Master Sword is upgraded again into the Golden Sword via throwing it to the Mysterious Pond of the Cursed Fairy inside the Pyramid of Power in the Dark World.

A Link Between Worlds[]

In A Link Between Worlds, the weapon is renamed the Master Sword Lv2. It is obtained by bringing two pieces of Master Ore to Hyrule's Blacksmith at the Blacksmith's Forge. Similar to A Link to the Past, it is three times more powerful than the Forgotten Sword, and its Sword Beams are 1.5 times more powerful. It can be further upgraded to the Master Sword Lv3 when Link brings the remaining two Master Ore pieces.

The Master Sword Lv2 is obtainable in a Treasure Chest in Level 5 in Ancient Stone Tablets. Like the previous Sword, the player can rent the next level.

Trivia[]

  • The Master Sword Lv2 or its superior upgrade are not required to complete A Link to the Past or A Link Between Worlds, as Ganon or Yuga Ganon can be defeated with the standard Master Sword.
  • As the Master Sword Lv2 is roughly double the power of its normal state, this makes the weapon's strength comparable to the Biggoron's Sword in Ocarina of Time.
  • The alternate official artwork of the Tempered Sword in A Link to the Past shows the sword without its red-orange blade, with only its hilt being that color.

Notes

  1. The Master Sword Lv2 is referred to as the Tempered Sword in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past — Nintendo Player's Guide by Nintendo of America.[2] However, as this contradicts the name given in Encyclopedia, it is not considered Canon.
