Yoshi is a major character in the Mario franchise and the namesake member of the Yoshi species and franchise. He first appeared in the Super Nintendo Entertainment System game, Super Mario World, in which he assists Mario and Luigi on their journey to rescue Princess Peach. Yoshi has since appeared in several other Mario games, and has starred in some of his own, such as Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Story. Yoshi is also playable in several Mario spinoff titles, such as in every Mario Kart and Mario Party installment.

Link's Awakening[]
In The Legend of Zelda series, Yoshi first appears in the form of the Yoshi Doll in Link's Awakening. The obtain text associated with the Yoshi Doll in Link's Awakening and Link's Awakening DX mentions how Yoshi has been recently showing up in several games. In Link's Awakening for Nintendo Switch, it instead mentions Yoshi's countless appearances, as he has appeared in several more games released between the original games' release and the Nintendo Switch remake.
Ocarina of Time[]
Yoshi makes a cameo in Ocarina of Time, in which he is one of several paintings that can be seen through a window in the Hyrule Castle Courtyard. The cameo of Yoshi and the other portraits are not retained in Ocarina of Time 3D.

Yoshi is playable in every installment of the Super Smash Bros. series. Yoshi is notably the first character who teams up with Link in Super Smash Bros. Brawl's Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary.
