Not to be confused with Horned Statuettes.

The Horned Statue, also known as a Demon Statue[3] and formerly the Horned God,[1] is a character in Breath of the Wild[4] and Tears of the Kingdom.[5]

Biography[]

Breath of the Wild[]

The Horned Statue is found along the path to Firly Pond in Hateno Village. Link can speak to Teebo to be guided to the Horned Statue's exact location,[6] though Teebo has no knowledge of what the Statue is meant for.[7]

If Link prays to the Horned Statue, he will note that there are still people who pay him homage.[8] When Link reacts with shock, the Horned Statue is surprised that he is able to be heard.[9] If Link denies hearing his voice, the Horned Statue says he makes bargains with those who can hear him.[10] He asks Link if he was praying for a long life or wealth, promising that he can grant these requests.[11]

The Horned Statue explains that he once made life-for-money bargains. The Goddess Hylia, disapproved of his heinous dealings and smote him by trapping him inside the Horned Statue.[12] Since then, he has been neglected by the residents of Hateno Village.[13] Despite this, the spirit of the Horned Statue remained headstrong and chose to bide his time waiting for another person to make a deal with him.[14] He asks Link if he would like to strike a bargain.[15] Without waiting for an answer, he steals either a Heart Container or a Stamina Vessel from him.[16] This initiates "The Statue's Bargain" Side Quest, tasking Link with the responsibility of recovering his stolen essence.[2]

In speaking to the Horned Statue once again, he at first pretends not to understand why Link is upset.[17] When Link demands his stolen essence back, the Horned Statue laughs at Link for believing he was deceived.[18] He hopes that they will have a long and profitable relationship, and he explains that for a price, he will give Link either a Heart Container or a Stamina Vessel.[19] When Link chooses which one to receive, the Horned Statue tells him to stay still as he returns his essence to him.[20]

Afterwards, the Horned Statue notices that Link is sceptical, and he explains that he sees money and life as the same thing.[21] He explains that Link can sell either of his essences to him for 100 Rupees and buy it back for 120 Rupees.[22] However, he allows Link to choose whether he receives a Heart Container or a Stamina Vessel.[23] Link can begin this process by praying to the Horned Statue again.[24] After this, the Side Quest will be completed.

When Link approaches the Horned Statue, he asks if he has come to tamper with his essences.[25] If the Horned Statue is not currently holding any essences, he will ask Link if he is willing to sell them.[26] The Horned Statue will only take the essence that Link asks him to.[27] Through this process, Link is able to transfer the upgrades that he has received from Goddess Statues from Heart Containers to Stamina Vessels, or vice versa.

If Link attempts to sell his Heart Containers or Stamina Vessels beyond their default limitations (3 Hearts and 1 full Stamina Wheel), the Horned Statue will reject his request.[28][29] Additionally, if Link tries to speak to the Horned Statue before he has received any blessings from The Goddess Hylia, he will be turned away and instructed to return with something to trade.[30]

Tears of the Kingdom[]

After the Calamity, the statue mentions once again how he was turned into a statue long, long ago.[31] He then recounts how he continued his bargains in a village (presumably Hateno village).[32] He was then moved from the main street to the outskirts of town, scorned and neglected.[33] This is corroborated by an earlier quote in Breath of the Wild, in which he says the villagers don't bother to clean bird droppings from him.[13] Due to the Goddess' displeasure he was relocated to a pond and then ultimately here.[34] He currently sits in the Royal Hidden Passage.

Jerrin breaks open the entrace to the Royal Hidden Passage in the Emergency Shelter at Lookout Landing, and by speaking to her, this starts the Who Goes There? quest. She claims to hear a demon from behind the opening. By investigating the opening, the Horned Statue is found off to the side of the main passage, in a room blocked by cracked rock, which can be broken with a weapon or Yunobo's Vow. It does not recognize Link, but offers the same service as in Breath of the Wild. After telling Jerrin, she claims to know a bit about demon statues and quotes "A dealer in life and power touched by the wrath of the Goddess, fallen to ruin." from an unknown source. Jerrin argues that the dais was the place it was enshrined back when the horned statue was still a god.[35] She goes on to claim that the horned statue is the opposite of the goddess of light[1] (Goddess Hylia), that both entities cannot exist without the other and that their power manifests through the other's existence[36].

Trivia[]

  • In the German and Latin American Spanish versions of Breath of the Wild, the Horned Statue says that he is a deity of life and strength.[37][38] Similarly in Tears of the Kingdom the statue is said to be an entity who deals in life and power.[5]
  • At one point, he recalls his time at the bottom of a pond by humorously stating that fish make terrible deals.[39]
