Bipsom (Pip for short) is a recurring character in The Legend of Zelda series.[2][note 1] He is the son of Bipin and Blossom. His personality and path in life develop as a result of Link's decisions.[4]
Biography[]
Infancy[]
Link can first encounter Bipsom inside Bipin's & Blossom's House, which is a location in both Horon Village in Oracle of Seasons and Lynna City in Oracle of Ages. Bipsom is first seen as an infant in the arms of his mother, Blossom, with his father, Bipin, running around back and forth nearby. If Link speaks to Blossom, she explains that she is having trouble thinking of a name for her baby and asks Link if he can think of one.[3] After naming the child, Blossom asks for confirmation of Link's chosen name.[5] Link can say "No" to modify the name. Once Link says "Yes," Blossom agrees to call him that name and tells Link to visit them anytime.[6][7] If Link speaks to Blossom again, she expresses hope that her son will grow up strong and healthy like Link.[8] If Link speaks to Bipin after naming his son, he remarks that it is a fine name and that he hopes he will grow up to be a fine child.[9][10] The name that Link gives the baby may affect his personality and life path. If Link visits the family to complete each step of their story line, their son can develop into a child over the course of the game and continue to grow into adulthood throughout the following Linked Game or Hero's Secret.
After Link collects two Essences and has named Bipin's and Blossom's son, Link can revisit the family and talk to Blossom to find that their son is ill and needs a doctor.[11] Blossom explains that they do not have enough Rupees to see a doctor and asks if Link would lend them some.[11] If Link says "No," Blossom says she understands.[12] If Link says "Yes," Blossom asks him how much he will lend them.[13] If Link chooses an amount of Rupees that is higher than what he currently has, then Blossom will tell him that he does not have enough.[14] If Link gives Blossom 1 Rupee, she says that his sympathy is enough.[15] If Link gives her 10 Rupees, she thanks him and says she will have to find a way to earn the rest of the Rupees.[16] If Link gives her 50 Rupees, she thanks him and says that it should be just enough.[17] If Link gives her 150 Rupees, she thanks him and calls him a "true samaritan."[18] If Link leaves and re-enters the house and speaks to Blossom, she thanks him again and says that she can take her baby to the doctor now.[19] The amount of Rupees Link gives can affect the outcome of the child's personality and life path. Once Link has walked around the Overworld for at least 8 screens, he can return to Blossom to find that the baby is no longer ill.[20]
After Link has collected four Essences and has learned that the baby is no longer sick, he can speak to Blossom to find that the baby is not sleeping enough.[21][22] Blossom asks Link how she can get him to sleep.[22] Link can either advise her to sing or play with the baby.[23][24] If Link speaks to her afterward, she comments about how her son is a "darling baby."[25] The decision that Link chooses here affects the outcome of the child's personality and life path.
Childhood[]
Once Link has obtained six Essences and given Blossom advice for getting the baby to sleep, he can visit the family to find that their son has grown into a child.[26] The child can develop one of three personality types based on the choices that Link made previously. If Link advised Blossom to play with him to get him to sleep, then the child will become "hyper."[27] If Link advised Blossom to sing him to sleep, then the outcome of his personality is determined by the amount of Rupees Link gave Blossom for the doctor. If Link gave her either 1 Rupee or 10 Rupees, then the child will become "bouncy."[28] If Link gave her 50 Rupees, then the child will become "shy."[29] If Link gave her 150 Rupees, then the child may become "shy" or "hyper" based on what Link named him.
After Link defeats General Onox in Oracle of Seasons or Veran in Oracle of Ages, the family moves away to either Labrynna or Holodrum depending on the game.[30][31] After defeating Onox in Oracle of Seasons, Bipsom and his parents can be seen in a small scene in Horon Village as the four Seasons are being restored back to normal. Bipsom continues to develop in the following Linked Game or Hero's Secret. However, if he is an adult and Link progresses to a Hero's Secret, the story line is reset back to the beginning when their son was an infant. When Blossom asks for Bipsom's name again, his name from the previous game is automatically typed out already in the typing screen, but Link is able to rename him. Upon first visiting the family after they have moved, Link can speak to Blossom, who asks if Link remembers naming their son and comments that he is doing well.[32] If Link speaks to their son, he asks if Link remembers him.[33][34][35]
After Link has spoken to the child before and then walked around the Overworld for at least 8 screens, he can return to the family to advance their story line further. If Link speaks to Blossom, she comments about their son's personality and asks how Link was as a child,[27][36][37] first asking if he was energetic or hyper.[38][39][40] If Link says "No," Blossom asks if he was quiet.[41] If Link says "No" again, she asks if he was weird.[42] If Link says "No" three times in a row, she says guesses that Link's personality was hard to sum up in one word and will repeat the dialogue is Link speaks to her again.[43] Once Link says "Yes" to one of the questions, Blossom comments about his answer.[44][45][46] Link does not have to speak to Blossom at this point in order for the family's story line to progress, but his responses to her influence Bipsom's life path.
Bouncy Child[]
As a "bouncy" child, he has rosy cheeks and constantly bounces between the two beds in the House. If Link speaks to him, he introduces himself and describes his name as "groovy."[47] His mother believes that, although he is a strange child, he will become a man of great deeds.[48] After Link has spoken to the child before in a Linked Game or Hero's Secret and then walked around the Overworld for at least 8 screens, he can speak to him again to receive a question. He asks Link what came first, the chicken or the egg.[49] If Link says the "Chicken," the child questions how the chicken hatched.[50] If Link says the "Egg," the child questions who laid the egg.[51] Afterwards, no matter what personality he has, the child says that he cannot wait to grow up.[52] The responses that Link gives the child influences his life path as an adult.
Shy Child[]
As a "shy" child, he wears glasses and runs away from Link if he approaches him. If Link talks to him, the child stutters as he introduces himself, only to run away after realizing that he spoke to a stranger.[53] After Link has spoken to the child before in a Linked Game or Hero's Secret and then walked around the Overworld for at least 8 screens, he can speak to him again to receive a question. He asks Link if he is strong.[54] If Link says "Yes," he says that he will be strong too, so he can protect his parents.[55] If Link says "No," the child is surprised and wonders if it bothers Link.[56] Afterwards, no matter what personality he has, the child says that he cannot wait to grow up.[57][58] The responses that Link gives the child influences his life path as an adult.
Hyper Child[]
As a "hyper" child, their son will have long hair and constantly runs around the room. If Link speaks to him in Oracle of Ages, the child explains that he was named by a "great man," referring to Link.[59] In Oracle of Seasons, perhaps as a development mistake, the child instead states the same quote that the musician Bipsom says when telling Link that he is writing a song about him.[60] After Link has spoken to the child before in a Linked Game or Hero's Secret and then walked around the Overworld for at least 8 screens, he can speak to him again to receive a question. He will ask Link if he has a girlfriend.[61] If Link says "Yes," he says that he likes someone too.[62] If Link says "No," he speculates that Link is not ready for one.[63] Afterwards, no matter what personality he has, the child says that he cannot wait to grow up.[52] The responses that Link gives the child influences his life path as an adult.
Adulthood[]
Once Link has obtained two Essences and answered the child's question, he can visit the family to find that the child has grown into an adult and chosen his path in life. If Link speaks to Blossom, she asks if he remembers naming their son and comments about how he turned out.[64][65] Their son can become a traveler, an aspiring hero, an arborist, or a musician. If he is either an aspiring hero or a traveler, Blossom says that he has grown into a fine man.[65] If he is an arborist, she says that he is a master arborist.[66] If he is a musician, then she says that he is a famed musician.[67] If Link speaks to Bipsom, he also says a unique phrase depending on his life path.[68][69][70][71]
Traveler[]
Bipsom can become a traveler in a Linked Game or Hero's Secret. He wears sunglasses, has spiky hair, and can be found singing either in bed or on a table. Though his mother is worried that he idles his time away,[72] Bipsom decides to travel the world once Link has collected four Essences and spoken to Bipsom before as an adult.[73] Bipsom asks Link for a contribution of Rupees for his travels.[74] If Link refuses, Bipsom calls him stingy.[75] If Link accepts, Bipsom asks how much he wants to contribute.[76] If Link does not give him any Rupees, he gets upset and says that he cannot buy anything.[77] If Link gives him 10 Rupees, he says that it is better than nothing.[78] If Link gives him 50 Rupees, Bipsom is disappointed with the low amount.[79] If Link gives him 100 Rupees, he is appreciative and exclaims that he will never forget this favor.[80][81]
After collecting six Essences, Link can talk to Bipsom to find that he has returned from building character on his travels.[82] As a thanks for Link's donation earlier, Bipsom gives him a reward.[83] If Link donated 100 Rupees, he completely refills Link's Seed Satchel.[84] If Link donated 50 Rupees, he is given 200 Rupees.[85] If Link donated 10 Rupees, he is given a Gasha Seed.[86] Even if Link did not donate any Rupees, Bipsom gives him 10 Bombs.[87] No matter what Link donated, Bipsom tells Link that they are friends from now on.[88]
Hero[]
Bipsom can become an aspiring hero in a Linked Game or Hero's Secret.[69][89][90][91] He wears a red version of the hat worn by his father, Bipin, and wields a Sword and Shield. Bipsom asks Link for advice on becoming mightier once Link has collected four Essences and spoken to Bipsom before as an adult.[92][93] Bipsom asks Link if training daily will make him mightier.[94] If Link says "No," he asks if natural talent will.[95] If Link says "No" again, Bipsom then asks if a caring heart will.[96] If Link says "No" three times in a row, Bipsom comments that becoming mighty is difficult.[97] If Link says "Yes" to any of the questions, Bipsom will stop asking questions and say that he has learned a lot.[98] No matter what Link answered, Bipsom then exclaims that he will continue his training.[99]
After collecting six Essences, Link can talk to Bipsom to gain a reward based on his answer on how to become mightier.[100] If Link said "daily training," Bipsom gives him 100 Rupees.[101] If Link said "natural talent," then Bipsom recovers his Life Energy by one Heart.[102] If Link said "a caring heart," Bipsom fully recovers Link's Life Energy.[103][104] If Link answered "No" to every question, then Bipsom gives him one Rupee.[105] No matter the outcome, Bipsom again states that he will continue training.[99]
Arborist[]
Bipsom can take the path of his father, Bipin, and become an arborist in a Linked Game or Hero's Secret.[106][66] Bipsom can only become an arborist if Link paid Blossom either 50 or 150 Rupees for the doctor when he was a baby. He looks like his father, but with a more green color tone and facial hair. He can always be found digging soil next to his father in their House. His mother, Blossom, says that he has high hopes and big dreams.[107] Once Link has collected four Essences and spoken to Bipsom before as an adult, Link can speak to Bipsom to find that he dreams of filling the world with trees and gives Link a Gasha Seed in hopes that he will help fulfill his goal.[108][109][110]
After collecting six Essences, Link can talk to Bipsom to receive various tips about Trees and Mystical Seeds, similar to what his father does.[111] He tells Link that most enemies stop moving when they are hit with Pegasus Seeds,[112][113] that using Mystery Seeds on Buzz Blobs disables their electricity,[114][115] that Gale Seeds can be used to blow enemies away,[116] and that huge Rupees can sometimes be found by digging holes with the Shovel.[117][118]
Musician[]
Bipsom can become a famed musician in a Linked Game or Hero's Secret.[67] Bipsom can only become a musician if Link advised Blossom to sing to Bipsom to get him to sleep as a baby. He can always be found singing and playing his guitar. Bipsom's mother enjoys his songs.[119] He is writing a song about Link and his deeds.[71][120] After Link collects four Essences and has spoken to Bipsom before as an adult, Bipsom's song is almost finished, but he needs to know what Link values love or courage more.[121] Regardless of Link's answer, Bipsom thinks that Link will like the song.[122]
Once Link has collected six Essences, Bipsom's song is finished and he asks Link if he will listen to it.[123] If Link says "No," Bipsom invites Link to come listen anytime.[124] If Link says "Yes," Bipsom will play Link the song. If Link told Bipsom that he values love more, then Bipsom will play the theme that is heard when rescuing Princess Zelda. If Link chose courage, he plays the melody that is heard after rescuing either Din or Nayru. No matter what song is played, Bipsom asks Link how the song was and Link's Life Energy is restored.[125] The song continues to play until Link leaves the house. Link can return to Bipsom anytime to hear the song again and restore his Life Energy.
Possible Life Paths[]
The life path that Bipsom takes as an adult depends on all of the decisions that Link made. Due to the name influencing it as well, some combinations of decisions may lead to two possible outcomes. These are all of the possible life paths based on Link's decisions.

Other Appearances[]
Oracle of Seasons (Wessel)[]
Bipsom appears as an infant in the Oracle of Seasons book by Craig Wessel. If Link enters Bipin's & Blossom's House, Link notices a baby when Bipin takes him out of his crib.[126] When Link asks what the baby's name is, Bipin and Blossom explain that they have not named him yet and ask Link if he can think of a name.[127] Link then suggests the name "Bipsom" as a portmanteau of his parents' names.[128] Bipin and Blossom like the suggestion and agree to name him "Bipsom."[129] As Link leaves the House, Bipin thanks him for the help with naming Bipsom and promises that he and Bipsom will never forget him.[130]
