Lara El was a Kryptonian, and the mother of Superman. She died when Krypton was destroyed.[1]

History[]

When her husband learned Krypton's sun was going to explode at some point before 1978,[2] and no one believed his warnings, Lara and Jor-El sent their infant son Kal-El to Earth in a rocket. She and Jor-El both died when Krypton was destroyed.[1]

A statue of Jor and Lara holding up Krypton stood in the Fortress of Solitude.[3]

Background information[]

  • Lara Lor-Van and her husband Jor-El died in the destruction of Krypton.
  • The ice statue of Lara and Jor-El holding Krypton in the Fortress of Solitude was designed by Jerome Moore. He had to put Lara on her tip-toes and only use the tips of her fingers to support Krypton, due to the height difference with Jor.[4] He created standard concept designs for both characters before designing the sculpture. He gave them circlets to suggest their high status, with Lara's having a more mystical design. The producers wanted her hair exposed rather than covered with a cowl, as previous versions of the character had, to make her seem less cold.[5]
