Incapacitation, or Incapacitated, is a recurring status effect in Xenoblade Chronicles series.
Xenoblade Chronicles[]
In Xenoblade Chronicles and Future Connected, the status only applies to members of the active party once their HP reaches zero. When under the effects of incapacitation, the character will fall to the ground, unable to do anything and their portrait will show the character's low-Tension portrait with its colour inverted. In the Definitive Edition, the character's low-Tension portrait has a slightly cherry red hue, and a small glowing beacon will emanate from the character's body.
If a party member is incapacitated, they can be revived by another member of the active party if at least one of third of the Party Gauge is filled. Subsequently after revival, the character will usually have very low tension and will need to be supported by another team member to return them to normal.
If the lead party member (the character that is currently controlled by the player) becomes incapacitated and the party gauge is not filled enough for one of the other two party members to revive them (or if the other party members are themselves incapacitated), the battle ends in a loss. The party will then be sent to the nearest Skip Travel Point.
When a battle ends or the party flees a battle successfully, any incapacitated party members will automatically be revived with 1 HP.
When not in battle, as well as when the party has their weapons sheathed, incapacitation of the leader will immediately return the party to the nearest Landmark (regardless of how full the party gauge is). Party members other than the leader cannot be incapacitated outside of battle, instead being reduced to a minimum of 1 HP. Should the party be incapacitated during the final battle in Future Connected, the game will return to the title screen.
Equipping Unbeatable gems to the party will result in attacks that would normally incapacitate the party member to occasionally deal enough damage to 1 HP. Certain battle-relevant characters such as Dickson and Alvis will be equipped with weapons that are fitted with a special Unbeatable VI Gem which gives them 100% immunity to Incapacitation.
Xenoblade Chronicles X[]
The status in Xenoblade Chronicles X only applies to on-foot members of the active party once their HP reaches zero. When under the effects of incapacitation, the character will fall to the ground, unable to do anything. A stream of white pixel-like particles rises from their body.
If a party member is incapacitated, they can be revived by another member of the active party if they have at least 3,000 TP. They will have a short period of invincibility. Using Reinvigorate augments or the Rising Renewal and Healing Touch Skills increases the amount of HP party members have when revived. If the whole party is incapacitated, they will be sent to the nearest Landmark. If the party is defeated during any phase of the final boss, they will still be sent to the only landmark in the final area, but they can continue the fight at which phase they were defeated on. When a battle ends or the party flees a battle successfully, any incapacitated party members will automatically be revived with 1 HP.
If the lead party member (the character that is currently controlled by the player) becomes incapacitated, they are given the option to either let the battle play out and hope the rest of the party can defeat the enemy or acquire 3,000 TP, or abandon the fight. If the rest of the party is defeated, the 30 second time limit expires, or the battle is abandoned, the battle will be counted as a loss. The party will then be sent to the nearest Fast Travel point. All party members' TP will be depleted.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2[]
In Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Torna ~ The Golden Country, the status only applies to members of the active party once their HP reaches zero. When incapacitated, the Driver and their active Blade will fall to the ground, unable to do anything, with a pillar of white light rising from their bodies.
Effects[]
If a party member is incapacitated, they can be revived by another member of the active party if at least one of third of the Party Gauge is filled. The Affinity of the incapacitated Driver and Blade will also decrease by 400, to a minimum of 1.
If the lead party member (the character that is currently controlled by the player) becomes incapacitated and the party gauge is not filled enough for one of the other two party members to revive them (or if the other party members are themselves incapacitated), the battle ends in a loss. The party will then be sent to the nearest Landmark.
The party leader will also become incapacitated by falling off the area. Party members other than the leader cannot be incapacitated outside of battle, instead being reduced to a minimum of 1 HP. Upon returning to the nearest Landmark, the party leader and their currently active Blade will comment about it.
Some Affinity Chart skills, such as Tora's Grin and Bear It, will result in attacks that would normally incapacitate the party member to occasionally deal enough damage to 1 HP. When Rex uses Pneuma, he will be saved from being incapacitated once per battle.
During the second battle against Jin and Malos at the Gotrock Oracle Ruins, Rex becomes immune to being incapacitated, as he is prevented from going below 1 HP. Also, should the party be incapacitated during the final boss in Xenoblade Chronicles 2, as well as during the penultimate boss in Torna ~ The Golden Country, the game will return to the title screen. Additionally, during the final battle in Torna ~ The Golden Country, if Team Lora gets incapacitated, they will automatically revive to full health after a couple seconds.
Instant-death Code[]
If the player holds L, R, ZL, ZR, X, and Down on the D-Pad for 5 seconds, a secret instant-death code will activate, which will cause the party leader to be incapacitated, making them enter their falling death animation.
If the buttons are still held when the party respawns, the party leader and their Blade will be stuck in their falling death animations and they will be unable to move, as the game considers them to be in an incapacitated state. Engaging with an enemy and then disengaging them in this state will restore the party leader's movement, but if they fall off a ledge, they will be stuck in their falling animation, but still able to move around, a state referred to as "Zombie Hovering". Through this, the player can no-clip out of bounds and survive any fall. This state can also be achieved by activating the code while bonding with a Core Crystal.
This code can also be used to warp Rex back to Gramps's Back and the Ancient Ship by activating the code during the tutorial pop-ups when Rex first arrives in Argentum and at the start of Chapter 2, respectively. However, doing so will result in the player being unable to progress the game, as Rex will not be able to return to where he is required to be.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3[]
Incapacitation in Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and Future Redeemed is sometimes referred to as Downed or KO'd. The status only applies to members of the active party once their HP reaches zero. When incapacitated, the party member will fall to the ground, unable to do anything, with a pillar of white light rising from their bodies. While in their Ouroboros forms, when using a Talent Art, or during a Chain Attack, allies cannot be incapacitated.
Effects[]
If a party member is incapacitated, they can be revived by a party member with the Healer Role or by any party member that is equipped with a Memory Locket. Reviving a fallen ally requires holding the A button for a short time when near an incapacitated party member. If multiple characters revive the same fallen ally, the revival time will be shortened for each additionally Healer.
If the entire party falls in battle, or if the currently controlled character falls off the map, the battle ends in a loss. The party will then be sent to the nearest Landmark, or have the option to retry the fight during certain story fights. If the entire party is defeated during any phase of the final boss, the player will be sent to the title screen instead of the nearest landmark. When a battle ends or the party flees a battle successfully, any incapacitated party members will automatically be revived with 1 HP.
When not in battle, as well as when the party has their Blades sheathed, incapacitation of the leader will immediately return the party to the nearest Landmark. The party leader will also become incapacitated by falling off the area. Party members other than the leader cannot be incapacitated outside of battle, instead being reduced to a minimum of 1 HP.
