English: Desastre da ponte das barcas, on 29 March 1809, during the second napoleonic invasion of Portugal.
In an attempt to escape the sword of the enemy, people of Porto tried to take refuge on the left bank of the Douro River, but the bridge collapsed under their weight.
The tragic and brutal event went down in history as "Desastre da ponte das barcas".
To this day, everyday, candles are lit up at the foot of this stele, near "Ponte Luis I°".
